On the heels of the tearful sendoff of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, husband-and-wife show creators Amy Sherman-Palladino and Daniel Palladino announced their new streaming series from Prime Video, the ballet drama Étoile.

While it appeared that the creative couple might take a break after five fast-paced, ambitious seasons of Mrs. Maisel, it turns out they'e ready to get back to the grind.

“Well, guess that plan for early retirement will have to wait," they said in a joint statement. "Instead, we’ve decided to embark on an international journey with an unbelievable group of players and the most talented ballet dancers in the world. We will sleep when we’re dead.”

The new eight-episode series, which was green-lit for two seasons, will be shot on location in New York and Paris, and the multi-Emmy-winning duo will write, direct and executive produce the show.

“Amy and Dan are brilliant creators of remarkable and enduring characters and one-of-a-kind storytelling,” Jennifer Salke, the head of Amazon and MGM Studios said. “We’re incredibly excited for Étoile, as we have no doubt Amy, Dan, and their team will continue to produce incredible and impactful event television that we can’t wait to share with our global Prime audiences."

What is Étoile about?

Details about Étoile are so far scarce, but we know from a release from Prime Video that the series follows the dancers and artistic staff of two world-renowned ballet companies—one in New York City and the other in Paris—as they embark on an ambitious gambit to save their storied institutions by swapping their most talented stars. In other words, Bunheads fans—who have been licking their wounds since the show's 2013 cancelation—are in for a treat.

Who is cast in Étoile?

Amy Sherman-Palladino and her husband are known for casting the same actors across their projects: Milo Ventimiglia appeared in Gilmore Girls and Mrs. MaiselLiza Weil did Gilmore Girls and BunheadsKelly Bishop starred in all three of their major TV projects

We already know Étoile will star two actors from the Maisel universe and one from Gilmore Girls. Here are the details:

The fourth and final volume of his massive Orson Welles biography will come out in 2024.

Lou de Laâge

Lou de Laâge started her career very young, as a dancer. She made her acting debut at 17 and made her breakthrough with the film Breathe, directed by Mélanie Laurent. In the following years, she worked with renowned French directors and actors such as Juliette Binoche, Isabelle Huppert, Anne Fontaine and many more.

Gideon Glick most recently portrayed Tommy Cothran opposite Bradley Cooper in Cooper's MaestroHe also played the lovable illusionist Alfie on The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel. His character gets his big break as a result of Midge Maisel's tenacious manager, Susie Myerson, played by Alex Borstein.

David Alvarez

David Alvarez

David Alvarez, a proud U.S. Army veteran, played the iconic role of Bernardo, the fearless leader of the Sharks, in Steven Spielberg’s Academy Award-nominated West Side Story. He also won a Tony Award for Best Leading Actor in a Musical for his performance in Billy Elliot.

Charlotte Gainsbourg

Gainsbourg replaced Camille Cottin, who was dropped due to scheduling conflicts, to play Genevieve, the head of the Parisian company. 

Yanic Truesdale

Yanic Truesdale

Yanic Truesdale, who played beloved concierge Michel Gerard on Gilmore Girls, will take on the role of Raphael, who works closely with Genevieve.

What is the release date for Étoile?

A release date has not been announced, but the show reportedly started filming in Paris in January 2024.

Étoile will stream on Prime Video. No word yet on when the show will debut or how it will roll out.
