Avril Lavigne’s Sister Marries Japanese Pop Star (Update)

On Sunday February 19th, Avril Lavigne fans – especially her Japanese followers – were surprised by a post by a Japanese pop star announcing his marriage to “Michelle” accompanied by a photo of him with Avril’s sister, Michelle Lavigne.

Ryota Kohama, the bassist for ONE OK ROCK, posted the photo to his verified Instagram account that Sunday, writing “I am so happy because I got married with Michelle!! She is so amazing.” accompanied by a photo (above) of Ryoto with his arm around a smiling Michelle Lavigne.

Fans speculating about the announcement’s veracity turned up a private social media account under the handle “misher11” that’s followed by ONE OK ROCK members Toru and Ryota. The account is under the name “Michelle Kohama“, using Ryota’s surname, and has a photo of Michelle Lavigne as its profile picture.

Their connection may explain (or have resulted from) Avril Lavigne’s recent collaboration with ONE OK ROCK on the single “Listen” from the band’s new album “Ambitions”.

According to JapanToday, that song wasn’t the first time Avril met the group. She and ONE OK ROCK both appeared on the same Japanese music TV show in 2013, and met up again when they performed in Canada last year.

Yesterday the marriage rumours were confirmed, when Avril Lavigne posted the same photo to Twitter, writing “Congrats to my little sister Michelle and Ryota on their marriage! Wishing you both all the love and happiness in the world! #family #love”
