Tributes have been flooding social media, remembering the life and service of a beloved basketball coach and educator, Mark Mitchell.Mitchell died unexpectedly at the age of 56 last week.No one knows the life story of coach Mitchell better than his soulmate of more than 30 years, his wife Cheryl. The two of them — a team — since the first day they met as students on the campus of Eastern Kentucky University.She shared Mitchell’s love of sports and helping young people dream big. “Mark was a person who really just gave back. He gave everything he had, it really didn’t matter,” Cheryl Mitchell said.She said he was honest, and truthful, and he really was all about his family, his wife and his players. He was really dedicated to basketball.Mitchell led the Taft High School basketball team to their first state championship in school history in 2011, building the program through persistence, practice and tough love.He also served as a coach at a few other local schools, as well as Ohio State University and most recently, Wilberforce University.Mitchell was the father of four children Cameron, Kevin, Chelsea and WNBA player and OSU Hall of Famer Kelsey Mitchell.Funeral services for Mitchell will be held Saturday, beginning with a visitation at 10 a.m., followed by the funeral at noon at Lincoln Heights Missionary Baptist Church.Mark graduated from Eastern Kentucky University with a bachelor’s of science in Education in 1990. He later received master's degrees from both Mount St Joseph University and Marygrove College.
