Philip Hertel Obituary

Hertel, Philip
Philip Joseph Hertel (April 22, 1937- May 11, 2024) died at the Clark Home (Franklin campus) in Grand Rapids, Michigan near his childhood home on Benjamin Street in Eastown and where he taught for over 30 years, at East Grand Rapids Middle School.
Born in Detroit to Joseph and Gladys Hertel, he moved to Grand Rapids as a child and graduated from Ottawa Hills High School, Grand Rapids Community College, and Western Michigan University. He served in the United States Army and Army Reserve. While working, he earned a Master's in Education from Michigan State University. A lifelong math educator and mentor to generations of students, Phil was a proud member of his teachers' union and built the foundation for strong pay and pensions that carried him and colleagues into old age securely.
Phil was known to students, faculty, family, and friends for his laughter. He loved music and sang with the Westminster Presbyterian Church Sanctuary Choir, in barbershop quartets, and at weddings across the state and beyond. He served in many other ways at Westminster Church: Bethel Bible teacher, Elder, senior high leader, and through his involvement with Camp Henry (Newaygo, Michigan). Phil and his wife, the late Peggy Fisher Hertel, helped build the Eastown Community Association and were lifelong supporters of the Grand Rapids Public Schools, tutoring after their retirement and living in their neighborhood for decades throughout all its changes. His friendships were expansive, from building "Mopar" cars to his love of flying, motorcycles and cribbage.
Phil adored his family: his wife Peggy, daughters Shareen Hertel (Donald Swinton) and Heidi Hertel, son Joseph Hertel (Donna Hertel), grandchildren Garrett Vonk (Natacha Joyce), Gavin Vonk, Tessa Hertel, Josephine Swinton, Commodore Hertel, and great-grandson Miles Vonk, along with his many nieces, nephews, and cousins.
Visitation will be held from 4-7 p.m. on June 7, 2024 at Metcalf and Jonkhoff Funeral Home, 4291 Cascade Road, SE, Grand Rapids. A memorial service is planned for 11:00 a.m. on June 8, 2024 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 47 Jefferson SE, Grand Rapids. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Camp Henry in Memory of Phil Hertel: https://camphenry.org/donate

The Cook Family of Carlton Ave

May 30, 2024

My family lived adjacent to the Hertel Family for 25 years in Eastown; they are a wonderful family and Phil was the leader of the pack. Humor, intellect, integrity, generosity of spirit and good plain fun were just a few of the things that come to mind. Wishing Shareen, Heidi and JoeB and families the comfort of a life well lived. Our thoughts and prayers are with you all a this time.

Early Tuesday morning I saw a man standing on the corner of Lake Drive and Benjamin. He was looking down Benjamin toward his childhood home. Phil loved this neighborhood and all the people, and we loved him. There was no one better suited to be a teacher than Phil. I´ll never forget the day Phil trimmed Peggy´s pusswillow tree a little too much with his new chainsaw. So many great memories on Benjamin Ave. Love to the family, Ron & Chris Lichtenstein.

While I never had the pleasure of meeting Mr. Hertel, his picture just screams that he was a very fun guy, and would have been a treasured and most enjoyable friend. Rest in peace.

Phil was my mentor teacher in 1986 at East Grand Rapids Middle School. I cannot even begin to share how fabulous his mentorship was. After I graduated from college, Phil went to bat for me with the superintendent. As a result, I was the first teacher hired right out of college. In fact, Phil called my home and talked to my mother to tell me I was hired. I spent over 33 years at East Grand Rapids Middle School before my retirement. I owe each and every one to Phil Hertel. God bless you my friend. Safe passage!

The Man, the Myth, and the Legend !

Mr. Hertel was one of my favorite math influences (and favorite teachers) throughout my K-12 EGR education. We often spoke, and enjoyed talking about various strategies in Cribbage (because it involved a quick form of math).

A deeply soulful man who cared deeply about his students, his subject-matter (in this instance, Math); each beyond his family, and community commitments. By the picture in the obituary, it doesn't seem as he changed much over the years. What a great spirit for life !

May God bless Mr. Hertel, and all of those who knew and loved him
