Development

On November 17, 2017, Komixx Entertainment optioned worldwide screen rights to Ali Novak’s My Life With The Walter Boys, after broadening its relationship with online storytelling community Wattpad. The YA novel has more than 67M reads on Wattpad where it was originally published when Novak was 15. It was later published in print by Sourcebooks. Andrew Cole-Bulgin, Group CCO and Head of Film and TV at Komixx says, “My Life With The Walter Boys has all the key elements of a true teen classic: angst, loss, family relationships and of course, romance. It’s a great bittersweet family drama. Ali started writing this novel when she was just 15 herself, so it speaks directly to this young adult audience and reflects Komixx’s aim to seek out truly compelling original YA content to excite the digital generation.”[6] On June 29, 2021, Netflix ordered a series based on the Ali Novak YA novel “My Life With the Walter Boys.” The streamer gave the drama series a 10-episode order, with episodes set to be approximately 50 minutes each. Melanie Halsall adapted the book for the screen in addition to serving as showrunner and executive producer. Ed Glauser also executive produces via iGeneration Studios, which has acquired rights over the former Komixx Entertainment. Komixx will produce along with Sony Pictures Television International Productions.[3] The series’ writers include Halsall, Jordan Ross Schindler, Jonathon Roessler, Tawnya Bhattacharya and Ali Laventhol, Jesikah Suggs, Kelsey Barry, and Grace Condon.[7] Jerry Ciccoritti, Nimisha Mukerji, Winnifred Jong, and Jason Priestley directed the 10 episodes.[8] On December 19, 2023, Netflix renewed the series for Season 2 after just over 10 days on the streamer. The rapid renewal came as Season 1 quickly rose to popularity. In its first full week on Netflix, the first season tallied more than 12M views, putting it at the top of the English-language TV charts. The season was off to a strong start after debuting on December 7, shooting to No. 2 on the streamer’s Top 10 list with 7.5M views in just a few days of availability. The events of the book wrap up by the end of the season and, without giving too much away, the final episode departs from the ending of the book in a way that leaves the story ripe for a Season 2. Halsall remained mum about ideas for Season 2, admitting that she hasn’t sorted out all the details, including what’s in store for Jackie since she jetted off to New York at the end of Episode 10. Season 2 poses a big undertaking for Halsall, who will have to imagine a story for these characters beyond the pages that Novak originally wrote.[4]

Filming

Filming for the series began on April 11, 2022 and concluded by Aug 22 across Alberta, with filming locations in the city of Calgary, the town of Cochrane, and the town of Crossfield. The series is set in the fictional Silver Falls, Colorado, though the original novel was set in Denver.[9][10][5][11][12][13][14] Filming on the second season is set to commence in Calgary on July 22, 2024 and conclude on December 3.[15] It was originally set to film from May until October 2024.[16][17]

Casting

In April 2022, Nikki Rodriguez was set as the lead, as Sarah Rafferty, Marc Blucas, Noah LaLonde, Ashby Gentry, Connor Stanhope, Johnny Link, Corey Fogelmanis, Zoë Soul and Jaylan Evans rounded out the series regular cast.[5]
