Based on (and updated from) Kingsley Amis’s 1954 novel Lucky Jim, this series related happenings in the life of Jim Dixon (Keith Barron), a cautious lad from Eckersley, Yorkshire, newly arrived in Swinging London in the permissive 1960s.
Not liking what he saw and finding it hard to fit in, Jim indulged himself in Walter Mitty-like fantasies and private rants about the state of society around him.
In 1982, the series was revived for seven more episodes with the terminally unfunny Enn Reitel as Dixon, returning to London in 1967 after a year in Holland and resuming his position as a teacher of Medieval History at a red brick university.
The BBC productions were written by comedy stalwarts Dick Clement and Ian La Frenais.
