ADAMS COUNTY, Ind. (WANE) — An Adams County Councilman drove his truck into a pond on private property and was later arrested for operating while intoxicated, the Adams County Sheriff’s Office said.

Fred Velez, 55, was leaving a private driveway north of CR 500 N near CR 400 W when he ended up driving south into a ditch, across a grassy area and eventually into the pond.

According to police, his F-150 then started sinking. Cpl. Seth Prince and Deputy Daniel Girard both swam out to the truck and were able to free Velez.

You can see dashcam video of the rescue below:

He was investigated for an OWI because alcohol was believed to be a factor in the crash. Velez was later booked into the Adams County Detention Center.

Cpl. Prince had to be transported to the hospital to be treated for cold weather injuries. He was later released.

Online court records show an initial hearing for Velez is set for May 2.

His seat on Adams County Council is not up for re-election this year. The council and the Adams County GOP did not respond to inquires from WANE 15.
