Reviews
- This (or an abbreviated version of it) was recorded for possible release as a CSNY live album in 1974. The notion was evidently scrapped on the basis of the performances, which don't quite rise to the level of "ragged". Given their biographies, it is possible that the participants weren't at full game strength, if you get my drugs...er, I mean drift. Harmonies are out of tune; rhythms are off, guitar solos are sloppier than usual, some of the songs are just plain boring, and there is a palpable disunity to the proceedings. With all that being said, however, a diehard would probably treasure this release. What it mostly has going for it is atmosphere. You want CSNY? Well this is what they were all about, drugs and disunity included. You want to simulate the mood of an early 70's stadium show by the biggest stars in hippiedom? This achieves that. Non-fans won't care, and haters will barf. But as a document of the band and times, it works just fine. You get almost every song the band ever recorded, together or separately. You get the stage patter that places this so firmly in 1974 it is almost eerie. You get a shambolic performance that is both generous and a gyp at the same time. And you get excellent packaging, with a beautiful book and a very abridged DVD. Is it worth the money? To a CSNY superfan, absolutely. To people who wished the 60's hadn't ended in 1970, maybe. To casual listeners who want to hear "Our House" and "Deja Vu", probably not. To haters of CSNY and all they stand for, this is proof of their indolence. Me, I like it. I throw it on in the background to get that early 70's feeling. I acknowledge its many faults, but I am mostly forgiving of them. To a point.
