Northridge is a sprawling community in the San Fernando Valley with both urban and suburban sensibilities. The area was previously known as "the horse capital of the West" due to its popularity as a place where Hollywood celebrities built their ranches. Following the Second World War, the area saw one of the longest continuous real-estate booms in L.A.'s history, resulting in the construction of more residential and commercial buildings in what is now known as Northridge.

Though there aren't nearly as many celebrity ranches, several large estates are scattered around the neighborhood's streetscape. Many estates were custom-built with ornate historical styles, with houses mixing the stucco walls and clay tile roofing of Mediterranean homes with the steep side gables of French country estates. Estate communities give way to more traditional suburban single-family houses set along winding avenues and street blocks, fringed by towering palms and other leafier trees.

Suburban developers favored the casual living space and muted detail common in the low-built ranch and the mid-century modern style. Residents enjoy open floor plans and spacious yards where they can cultivate gardens or unwind with some lawn games. Mid-century modern homes share the ranch style's emphasis on accessibility to nature, accentuated by floor-to-ceiling windows and a mixing of indoor and outdoor spaces. And condos and apartments are also available in the more dense parts of Northridge.

The average price for a Northridge house hovers around $1,020,000, and sizes range from 3,200 to 8,400 square feet.

Residents are served by primary schools like Andasol Avenue Elementary, teaching students in grades K-5. Students move on to intermediate and secondary schools like Northridge Middle and Northridge Academy High Schools. Northridge Academy High has a partnership with the nearby California State University of Northridge to provide programs that expand learning opportunities and provide students with pathways to higher education.

After school, bring the kids over to the playground at Dearborn Park or start a pickup game of basketball. Enjoy one of Northridge's remaining orange groves on the California State University campus. Stroll around five acres of Valencia orange trees or relax by the campus' duck pond.

Need groceries? There are several local grocers and regional supermarkets around the neighborhood. Family Meat Market offers halal meats as well as dried and baked goods. Grab some fresh produce and browse the collection of imported Japanese products at Mitsuwa grocery store. Buy fresh produce and support local farmers at Northridge Farmer's Market, open for you to visit from March to October while walking around the shops at Northridge Fashion Center. Regional chains like Vons and Superking Markets also offer fresh produce and other household essentials.

You'll also find several quality cafes and restaurants in Northridge's shopping centers and along its thoroughfares. Porto's Cafe is a family-owned Cuban bakery serving excellent cheese rolls and cakes in a lively modern café space. Down Parthenia Street you'll find Brent's Deli, serving up excellent pastrami and club sandwiches over classic countertops and booths since 1967. Sample the wide selection of craft beers during happy hour at Yard House sports bar.

Proximity to major freeways gives Northridge residents access to the best L.A. County has to offer.

I like all the different eateries around Northridge that you can visit. There is a lot of traffic around Northridge and it seems it can take a long time to go a short distance.

It is quiet and safe, people here are rather relaxing, meanwhile, they are working hard on work. To be honest, it is a small town in the valley, just a normal suburban neighborhood that is no different than any other of its same kind in the United States.

Northridge has a lot to offer. There are so many great places to get a quick bite to eat. Everyone is friendly. There are a lot of activities one can do during the week. For example, they have bowling, an arcade, skating, hiking etc.

I love living here. It is quiet and family friendly. Having CSUN here makes it a good crowd of young professionals and families.
