Former Chennai Super Kings player Ambati Rayudu has revealed that during his first season with the franchise, in 2018, most of the players in the squad were not 100% fit and hence MS Dhoni need not be at his best to have an impact on the team's success this season. He recalled his time with Chennai when he won the title in 2018, 2021 as well as last season.
Speaking about his first season with Chennai, Rayudu revealed that almost half of the players in the squad played while not being 100% fit and still got the job done. Over the last few weeks, reports around Dhoni playing with a muscle tear has surfaced.
Earlier, coach Stephen Fleming had said that it was an old injury to Dhoni which had grabbed the headlines now and the management is thus making him bat down the order to not exert pressure on him.
"I think with CSK, since the time I joined in 2018, I don't think half the team was fit (laughs). Most of us were carrying (niggles). With Mahi Bhai (Dhoni), I don't think he has been fully fit for the past 3-4 years. But whenever the time has come, the crucial matches come, he has always stood up," Rayudu said while speaking on Star Sports.
Rayudu scored 602 runs in 16 matches in IPL 2018 at a strike rate of 149.75. He eventually returned to the Indian team after that season.
With fitness issues lingering, Rayudu revealed how Chennai knew that their fielding was not the best back in 2018. He shed light on how Dhoni used to tell Shane Watson not to put too much burden on himself on the field.
"Every game we used to think that if the par score was 180, we would give 200 because of our fielding. Mahi bhai always used to tell Shane Watson, 'You're not moving. If the ball comes straight to you, you catch it. You don't dive," Rayudu said.
IPL 2018 was a remarkable season for Chennai, when they began their campaign with a one-wicket win over arch-rivals Mumbai Indians. They faced the Sunrisers Hyderabad in Qualifier 1 and beat them with ease in the encounter to move directly into the finals.
Chennai faced Hyderabad yet again in the final and an unbeaten 117-run knock off 57 deliveries from Watson took them to the title.
