Can't unlock your Android device

If you can't unlock your phone, you'll need to erase it. Then you can set it up again and set a new screen lock. If you can't sign in to your Google Account, learn how to recover your account.

Erase your phone

Important: These options erase all data stored on your phone, such as apps, photos and music. If you know the PIN or pattern of the device at the time of backup, you can restore data that's backed up to your Google Account.

Option 1: Erase your phone from another device

To secure or erase an Android device, make sure that the device:

  • Has power
  • Is connected to mobile data or Wi-Fi
  • Is signed in to a Google Account
  • Has Find My Device turned on
  • Is visible on Google Play

Option 2: Reset your phone with its buttons

You can erase your locked phone using its power and volume buttons. To learn how to reset your specific phone this way, visit your manufacturer's support site.

Reset your pattern (Android 4.4 or lower only)

  1. After you've tried to unlock your phone multiple times, you'll see 'Forgot pattern'. Tap Forgot pattern.
  2. Enter the Google Account username and password that you previously added to your phone.
  3. Reset your screen lock. Learn how to set a screen lock.
