Iyer returned to international cricket after an injury layover during the New Zealand ODI series. Iyer had spent time in rehab at the National Cricket Academy in Bangalore. The batter was deemed not fit for the opening Test match of the series where Suryakumar Yadav was given a debut. Iyer's problems with the back are not new. India head coach Rahul Dravid had earlier said that if fit, Shreyas Iyer is an automatic choice in the playing XI.

The batter, ahead of the third Test match at Indore had claimed that he was fully fit and the back issue was a thing of the past.

"Back injury has disappeared completely and I am happy. I feel that the rate with which I worked in the gym, and the practice sessions and everything that I was doing for the last 3-4 months caused it. I was managing to play with it for a while, because of which it aggravated. I was running and stuff in the gym, so I was probably doing exercises in the gym which I did not have to do," Iyer had said earlier.

Iyer is one of India's best batter against spin and was a key reason why India were not defeated in the Bangladesh Test series, late in 2022. Iyer had combined with Ravichandran Ashwin in saving the second Test match.
