Pirates select Jerad Eickhoff from Triple-A Indianapolis; designate Heath Hembree for assignment

The Pittsburgh Pirates today selected right-handed pitcher Jerad Eickhoff from Triple-A Indianapolis. Eickhoff is expected to start tonight and make his Pirates debut against the Cubs. To make room on both the 40-man and 26-man rosters, right-handed pitcher Heath Hembree has been designated for assignment. In addition, OF Jake Marisnick has been transferred from the COVID Injured List to the 60-day Injured List. The 40-man roster is at 40.

Eickhoff, who will wear uniform No. 43, has gone 4-3 with a 4.84 ERA (26 ER in 48.1 IP), 47 strikeouts, 15 walks, .208 opponents average and a 1.08 WHIP in 13 games (6 starts) for Indianapolis this season, including going 2-1 with a 3.42 ERA (10 ER in 26.1 IP) with 21 strikeouts in six starts since May 4. He has limited right-handed hitters to a .194 (19-for-98)line with just five extra-base hits in 2022.

The six-foot-four, 245-pounder last appeared in the Major Leagues with the New York Mets in 2021, going 0-2 with a 8.69 ERA (19 ER in 19.2 IP) with 13 strikeouts in 5 games (4 starts). He has combined to go 21-32 with a 4.35 ERA (222 ER in 459.2 IP), and 409 strikeouts against 136 walks in 85 career games (80 starts) across six Major League seasons with the Philadelphia Phillies (2015-19) and Mets (2021). He was a 15th-round selection by the Texas Rangers in the 2011 First Year Player Draft. He signed with the Pirates as a Minor League free agent on November 28, 2021.

Hembree, 33, went 2-0 with a 7.16 ERA (13 ER in 16.1 IP) with 12 strikeouts against 14 walks in 20 games for the Pirates this season.
