Back in second grade our school started what I think was a state wide competition called the Southern Literature Alliance. It was a pretty big competition, and the winners would go to a big event downtown that had the mayor and a bunch of other big government people. The school took it pretty seriously, so for about a week before the event we would look at books, poems, and practice writing our own. The teacher had placed a bunch of books on a table and let us pick one out to read. I took one that looked good and started going through it taking notes, I then found this one poem that I copied down. The name was The Whale. On the day we were supposed to write our own poems I just copied The Whale word for word and turned it in. After they were all collected they sent it to the people who decided who to give the awards to I remember getting really nervous that I would be caught for what I did and got in big trouble. Turns out, they didn't catch me, and I ended up winning the award. It's been around eight or nine years, and I just told my family about it after finding it hung up and framed at my grandparent's house.
Edit: The poem is by Douglas Florian if you're interested enough to go find it. (And Mr. Florian if you somehow see this, I'm sorry for stealing your work for an award)
