Sharon's dad passed away last year

Sharon Horgan has shared the tragic reason she's been silent for months.

The actress took to her Instagram page to share a post where she said her dad passed away at the end of 2023. She said she's still coming to terms with the loss. Posting an array of photos of her dad, Sharon noted that she hadn't posted in a while and said her dad is her "biggest cheerleader". She wrote a sweet caption where she said how much her dad meant to her.

Sharon wrote: "I haven’t posted for a while. My darling dad died at Christmas and I hadn’t - and still haven’t - learned how to accept condolences properly. But I was at the IFTAs at the weekend and it was my first one without him and lots of people talked to me about having met my dad and what a gorgeous man he was. And he really was. Such a dude.

"I was so proud of him and how he could talk to anyone. I remember him bending Brian Gleeson’s ear last IFTAS about how characterfully he ate an egg and onion sandwich in Bad Sisters. He was my biggest cheerleader but also the best at levelling it all and reminding you not to get ahead of yourself that none of it matters. He loved nothing more than tickling a grandchild or having a pint in the sun. And he really rocked a hat."

She signed off by saying: "I miss him terribly. Sending love to anyone who’s lost someone they love be recently or not so recently. Life is hard but it does go on. So. Back to posting photos, thanking people for dresses and whatnot and plugging my wares. Think he’d be happy with that."

Tamzin Outhwaite replied: "Oh Sharon I am so sorry… He sounds wonderful. Sending you love. He is watching you and still noticing everything. At all times." Meanwhile, Paloma Faith commented: "Sending so much love." Former Countdown host Carol Vorderman added: "Your Dad sounds like the gift of laughter and proper loving. I'm sorry for your deep loss. No words can make it better but he must have been so loved, to be missed as much as he is. And he was quite rightly so proud of you with love."

Father of five John Horgan was surrounded by his family when he passed away after being diagnosed with cancer. Originally from New Zealand, John relocated to County Meath whilst Sharon and sister Maria were still children and initially set up as a pub landlord before switching career completely to become a turkey farmer.

A source told The Sun : "He had been ill for the past couple of years, he had cancer. All the family were with him when he died. He was a very proud dad, they are a very tight unit as families go. He loved that none of his children let their fame go to their heads and are all very level-headed. He was firm but fair and they all loved him. They are a very private family and not sure how they will cope with his passing."
