Chita Rivera Children: Meet Lisa Mordente – Chita Rivera, born Dolores Conchita Figueroa del Rivero Anderson on January 23, 1933, is a renowned American actress, singer, and dancer.

She gained fame for originating lead roles in numerous Broadway musicals, including Anita in West Side Story, Velma Kelly in Chicago, and the title role in Kiss of the Spider Woman.

Rivera has been nominated for ten Tony Awards and has won three, including one for Lifetime Achievement. She is the first Latina and Latino American to receive a Kennedy Center Honor and was awarded the Presidential Medal of Freedom. In 2023, she published her memoir, Chita: A Memoir.

One of Rivera’s most significant accomplishments was her dual portrayal of Aurora and Spider Woman in the musical Kiss of the Spider Woman, for which she received Tony and Drama Desk awards for Best Leading Actress in a Musical in 1993.

She later played Roxie Hart in the London production of Kander and Ebb’s revival of Chicago and appeared in the Goodman Theatre’s production of The Visit as Claire Zachanassian in 2001.

In 2002, she was awarded the Kennedy Center Honor, and the following year, she received her eighth Tony Award nomination for her performance in the 2003 revival of Nine as Liliane La Fleur.

She also appeared in a 2005 episode of Will & Grace and starred in her retrospective show, Chita Rivera: The Dancer’s Life, in 2005, which earned her another Tony nomination.

Rivera’s contributions to the entertainment industry have been recognized in various ways. In 2009, she was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom by President Barack Obama.

Her early albums, Chita Rivera: Get Me To The Church On Time and And Now I Sing, were reissued on CD in 2013 by Stage Door Records. Rivera also released her third solo album, And Now I Swing, in November 2008.

In 2013, she played Princess Puffer in the Broadway revival of The Mystery of Edwin Drood and served as the Grand Marshal of the Puerto Rican Day Parade in New York City. Rivera returned to Broadway in 2015 in the lead role in The Visit, for which she received a Tony Award nomination and critical acclaim.

She was also honored with the Astaire Awards’ rebranding as The Chita Rivera Awards for Dance and Choreography in 2017 and received a Special Tony Award for Lifetime Achievement in 2018.

Time Out New York named her one of the best Broadway divas of all time in 2019. Rivera has also been a regular guest narrator at Disney’s Candlelight Processional at Walt Disney World, most recently appearing in the 2021 and 2022 seasons.
