Founded in 1902, The American School in Japan (ASIJ) is a private, coeducational day school, serving students from nursery (age 3) to grade 12 on two campuses: the Early Learning Center (nursery, pre-kindergarten, kindergarten) in Roppongi and the Chofu campus in western Tokyo (kindergarten-grade 12). The school serves students of all nationalities, with the majority having U.S. citizenship. The school year has two semesters.

Organization: The school is governed by a 15-member board of directors elected by the Board of Trustees of The American School in Japan Foundation, the sponsors of the school. Trusteeship in the Foundation is extended to representatives of business, U.S. Government, alumni and staff who have an interest in and provide financial support to the school.

Curriculum: The American School in Japan (ASIJ) is an independent, co-educational day school serving students of all nationalities. Founded in 1902, ASIJ offers an American-style college preparatory education for the children of international families, including those on temporary assignment, as well as families who make Tokyo their permanent home. The school offers a standards-based curriculum culminating in an American high school diploma. ASIJ’s program develops the necessary skills for a student to be successful in their future academic endeavors, including in Advanced Placement courses and other advanced topic courses. Complementing its academic program, ASIJ encourages students to engage in a wide variety of co-curricular experiences, including fine arts, athletics, and service-related clubs, which we believe contribute to the development of the whole child. ASIJ further draws on its unique presence in Japan by incorporating language and cultural studies that celebrate its host country. ASIJ is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC) and is a member of the National Association of Independent Schools (NAIS).

Faculty:  In the 2023-2024 school year, AISJ has 303 total staff including 234 teachers, 148 of whom are U.S. citizens, 34 host-country nationals, and 52 third-country nationals.

Enrollment: At the beginning of the 2023-2024 school year, enrollment was 1,711. Of the total, 890 were U.S. citizens, 509 were host country nationals, and 301 third-country nationals.

Facilities: ASIJ’s Chofu campus (kindergarten-grade 12) features libraries, fine arts facilities, video studios, science laboratories, choral and instrumental music rooms, an auditorium, three gymnasiums, a swimming pool, tennis courts, and playgrounds/sports fields. Creative Arts Design Center contains a multi-purpose performance space for elementary children, two elementary music rooms and two elementary art rooms, five design technology studio labs, one robotics lab, a strings room, a Japan Center, and a space for professional learning. ASIJ has a campus wide wireless network to support faculty, staff and students. Grades 6 through 12 have a 1:1 laptop program, 1:1 iPads in grades 1-5. Optional bus service to/from central Tokyo and the Chofu campus is available, with an average transit time of 50 minutes. The Early Learning Center (nursery-kindergarten) is a purpose-built facility featuring its own library, music room, community room, and playground.

Finance: In the 2023-2024 school year, more than 90% of the school’s operating income will be derived from tuition and fees. The remainder comes from donations, grants, investments, and auxiliary enterprises. Annual tuition rates for 2023-2024 are ¥2,735,000 to 3,015,000 ($18,862-20,793 at ¥145=$1US) for Nursery through grade 12, payable in Japanese yen.
