Love is one of the relatively few Soviet films about late teenagers/ young adults, which makes it worth seeing by itself, but its main strengh is in how relentlessly it conflates the personal with the political, jumping from young love to social questions of discrimination, hate and xenophobia (broadly speaking, as to avoid spoilers). It's a bit as if The Unbearable Lightness of Being were turned into a film but was actually good. The story, the characters and the country they live in is completely different, but I might not be able to better explain the full-speed collision of intimacy with society that is Love. A haunting gut-punch to me, personally, but more than its dreadful moments, exceptionally acted and very well written. A must-see.
the first thing that comes to my mind when attempting to review this film is that it genuinely deserves a second watch because I've never felt so uncertain about a picture and what i think of it.
when i first started watching it i wanted to quit because nothing scares me more than horny men. about half-way in sasha was kinda cute (when he smokes HOLY SHIT) but also low-key rapy and Vadik just seriously needed to be neutered. the final 30 minutes or so it's just pure cinema.
amazing character exploration mixed with a very clear and yet subliminal social critique, xenophobia and anti- semitism with a tragic ending for the pair. a very interesting film and while i didn't like the first half of it, the second one was simply brilliant.
Veering in tone between a sex comedy, a tragic love story about star-crossed lovers, and a thriller about anti-Semitism, this gorgeously shot, beautifully scored, sexy, sad, funny movie is worth anyone's time. She is so stunning as well.
