DIANA FORD IS OUR ARTS TEACHER OF THE YEAR!

CONGRATULATIONS to Diana Ford, our Arts Teacher of the Year!!!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“To me, Dance is about exploring the possibilities, creating your own vision, and inspiring future generations. I love teaching because it allows me to continue sharing my love for this art form through the passion and artistry I see in my students. They inspire me to keep growing and learning as an artist in every capacity, and I am so grateful for the opportunity to do what I love every single day...
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
They say that if you do what you love for a living you'll never have to work a day in your life, and I consider myself to be one of the lucky ones to have found that happiness.”

JAMEY POTTS IS OUR ACADEMICS TEACHER OF THE YEAR!

CONGRATULATIONS to Jamey Potts, our Academic Teacher of the Year!
⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀⠀
“My objective is to make social studies relevant to everyone, so that they can see that learning is a process that is useful for much more than passing a test. Knowledge is a tool that enables us to bring about positive change in our lives and communities , but that is only the first step. There needs to be action behind great ideas. So, I’m teaching much more than a core subject. I’m actually teaching problem-solving skills. It’s not enough to just sit around and complain. I push my students to be Doers and it’s contagious. I ❤️ it!”

3rd Annual Doctor Aromas Art of Aromas Scholarship Competition

On March 1, our high school visual arts program participated in the 3rd annual Doctor Aromas, Art of Aromas Scholarship Competition.

The Doctor Aromas Foundation focuses on using fragrance as art. Making a new aroma is a creative process made for the sense of smell, and Doctor Aromas believes that combining the two, aromas and visual arts, is an art form in itself. Their goal is to provide the community with resources to research and investigate things that are related to art and perfume.

Our students were provided with a new scent called “Verde by the Sea,” which is an herbal scent that includes bergamot, white lavender, and magnolia, and were required to use the scent as the inspiration for their art piece.
The winners were as follows:

1st place: Jonathan Henry, $2,000
2nd place: Katherine Guzman, $1,500
3rd place: Joshua Delbando, $500
Honorable Mention, $150: Julia Borowik, Em Diaz, Jahzel Ortiz, William Perry, & Melissa Villalongo

KAYLA MONTIZAAN IS A SILVER KNIGHT ART NOMINEE

We are extremely proud to announce our Silver Knight ART nominee, Kayla Montizaan ’19. Kayla’s project focusing on Alzheimer’s Awareness was inspired by her own personal experiences when her grandmother passed away from Alzheimer’s. Kayla spends her weekends at the Palace in Kendall and Homestead, teaching painting and ceramics to elderly patients who have been diagnosed with varying stages of Dementia and Alzheimer's. “This project is near and dear to my heart. Art is my passion, so being able to share my passion with people who gain that same excitement as I do when painting is amazing for me. It’s like teaching a kid to ride a bike without training wheels for the first time, when these people understand how to paint again is giving them that same excitement of learning something new. I focused mainly on the elderly because I feel as though it’s a community that tends to be forgotten, I wanted to give them the attention they desired by teaching them something that I am very passionate about. I strive to use my artistic abilities to help others around me and it’s important to care for those who once cared for us.”

Apart from her work with the elderly, Kayla is an honor roll student with dual enrollment at Miami Dade College. She is part of the Mayor’s Youth Council of Homestead and due to her dedication to the Homestead community, won the 2018 Community Championship Award at the Homestead Miami Speedway with a grand prize of 1,500 that she donated to the Alzheimer’s Association of South Florida.

Kayla also has a postcard line of her artwork, donating all the proceeds to different organizations such as the Alzheimer’s Association, Breast Cancer Awareness Foundation, various Venezuelan Relief Funds, and to people needing help in the community.
