Max Headroom is plotting its return to TV: A reboot of the satirical science fiction series, which ran on ABC for two seasons from 1987-88, is in development at AMC Networks, our sister site Deadline reports.
Original series star Matt Frewer is attached to reprise his role as the world’s first artificial intelligence TV personality. The ABC drama was set in a futuristic dystopia ruled by an oligarchy of television networks.
Halt and Catch Fire co-creator Christopher Cantwell will serve as writer/showrunner on the project, which is being produced by Elijah Wood and Daniel Noah’s SpectreVision and All3Media.

Which of today’s TVLine Items pique your interest?
Max Headroom? Let me guess, the barrel was empty so they tipped it over and looked under it?
Apparently, the well of new ideas has run dry.
The peanuts special looks great! So cute!
Max Headroom…a Coke Commercial spun off into a TV Show, the whole concept of which is extremely dated in 2022. Really? The creativity barrel has really hit the bottom to the extent reviving Max Headroom sounds like a good idea? Really?
In its first season, Max Headroom was a groundbreaking science fiction show. Of course it’s going to need tweaking, but if AMC can avoid try to make it more appealing to audiences by dumbing it down (the way ABC did for season 2) it can still be a good show.
Actually it was a British tv show Before the commercials. The American show came out after the Irish show finished a 3 series run. And seeing as it was set in the near future with corrupt corporations running the world, it seems pretty timely.
Ted Lasso was a commercial
Max Headroom was a big flop when it originally aired on ABC. Why in the world does it need to be rebooted?
I was only a kid, but I loved the show and thought it was ahead of its time. It’s definitely a cult classic and I think it deserves another chance.
I was an adult when the series was on, and thought it was brilliant. I still watch it again every few years, and always enjoy it.
Since they’re still using Matt Frewer, I’ll definitely be watching it.
Max Headroom was satiric brilliance. A future dominated by a few large, corrupt corporations, with TVs everywhere — pure comedy, right? Like many fans I was surprised to learn later that the video image of Max was never actually computer-generated — it was just Matt Frewer in prosthetics, makeup, and pretty rudimentary video effects. Now they can do it for real. I’ll watch.
Max Headroom might be good in small doses: Network interstitials, late-night bits, even back as a product spokesman. But, like most SNL skits, the longer he’s around, the more annoying he is. And the show wasn’t even really about Max in the first place, it was about his human alter-ego. On one hand, no idea why this is being revamped, but on the other hand…maybe it’s ripe for a massive overhaul revamp?
Yay for Moonhaven’s renewal! I am glad AMC+ is giving this show another season to continue telling its story.
I only came to make sure Matt Frewer was attached. I can go in peace.
