So why the sudden change
And what's this all about?
I know they speak your name
But where's the sound right now?
I can't stop praying you'll hear me play
I know that I'll be with you there someday
So where the hell's my hope
And why can't I just try?
You know I've lost a lot
But I won't let this die
I know I've got a friend up in the atmosphere
And another reason not to fear the sky
No, not tonight
Can I pull out all the stops
And get out of this town?
I want to make you proud
But I really don't know how
I know it's not helping to hear me say
I wish it was me in the car that day
Though something made me stop and think of what you said
You know it meant a lot
But I was just a kid
One with all these dreams of growing up and playing music on the road
I've been screaming all these years and thinking of you both
So where's my hope
And why can't I just try?
You know I've lost a lot
But I won't let this die
I know I've got this friend up in the atmosphere
And another reason not to fear the sky
No, not tonight
I wrote this note
Because I never even told you
You know I've got some things to sing about
Like we were young and holding true
To all these songs that always made us pull through
And now I've got some words that I'll write down
I'm sending this shit out
So where's my hope
And why can't I just try?
You know I've lost a lot
But I won't let this die
I know I've got this friend up in the atmosphere
And another reason not to fear the sky
No, not tonight
So where's my hope,
And why can't I just try?
You know I've lost a lot
But I won't let this die
I know I've got this friend up in the atmosphere
And another reason not to fear the sky
No, not tonight
So where the hell's my hope

I actually went to the same school as this kid, and I don't know exactly who this song was for, but I have a pretty good idea.
I could be wrong but...
At the school there was a death a few years back during I THINK homecoming, or another dance or something. (I may be a bit off, it was a while ago)
A kid died that day that alot of kids really looked up to and liked. I didn't know him but I know alot of the older kids really miss him. It was a very sad week. Nicholas "Big Bear" Thayer, I believe was his name.
Now that is complete speculation as AJ may of never knew him, but it's a good guess.
SP: I’m guessing one of the reasons why people seem to grasp on to “The Permanent Rain” is because the lyrical content is so deep/inspirational. Could you guys explain the backstory behind how that song came about?
AJP: Yeah, it’s actually about my Grandmother who passed away awhile ago when I was pretty young. When she died she left in her will musical instruments for me to play. Like a bass guitar and stuff like that…I picked up the bass guitar because of her. And she’s always been into music and pushing me into music. Then when she died it was sort of like “I have a friend up in the atmosphere” and I’m going to keep doing music, it’s what I’ve always dreamed of doing. Then also, tied in along with that, I have a friend who died in a car accident and it’s sort of a balance of both of them. Like, I wish them the best, and it’s just hard to get through those times, you know?

I read in an interview that they had that this song is about Aj and two of his very close friends that died but though they died at diffrent times he is using this song to tie them together and show the affects the deaths had on him.
directly fromt he site scenetrash.com this is what a.j. says the song really means
"The Permanent Rain" is a very personal song about two people very close to me who passed away. My good friend, and my grandmother. My grandmother taught me about music and always pushed me in that direction. The song is about how I wish she'd be here to see what I've done with what she gave me. It is generally about the grief caused by the situations, but using music as an outlet, and a reason to pursue music in general.
-AJ Perdomo (The Dangerous Summer)
I think it's about his parents dying in a car crash. Maybe even grandparents. Becuase it says "you both" meaning two people and the way he talks about them it sounds like a parental figure. Like he wants them to be proud of him. and he wish he would have died that day and not them. and I think he was youg. Becuase he says "I was just a kid"
I really enjoy this song but just now actualy listened to the lyrics.

i think he is crying out because he misses his parents...
they seem to have died in a car accident when he was younger and all he wants is for them to hear him play his music for them...
i just heard this song today but i love it and i cant get enough... great song. great lyrics. i love the guitar.
amazing. its a rare song thats actually filled with feeling and not just words
this song reminds me of god
yeahhh i love this song... does anyone know where i can download it. because its not on itunes or myspace or anywhere else. and i cant use limewire....
i believe that this song is about person who is in pain, because he or she has so much to say to the person/people he loves or is in love with.. and he has very little hope to say how he feels since he has had a lot or painful experiences in his or her past..
this person's still fighting strong though, and is trying his best to fight their fears, and say what they want to say.
