Coding Classes For Kids

Registration is NOW CLOSED for Discovery Cube Orange County’s newest children’s education program: Code Club Cubed. This event is now full, please check back for any future programs.

Students enrolled in Code Club Cubed will meet once a week to learn the basics of Scratch and participate in project modules, designed by Raspberry Pi Code Club, for the first hour, and then meet and discuss with their Code Club peers to work on projects together and receive assistance from skilled Code Club instructors.

Every Saturday we’ll provide two separate learning sessions:

  • Session 1 for kids in grades 1-3; Session 2 for kids in grades 4 – 6.

August Schedule

August 5: Intro to Scratch

Students are introduced to block-based programming basics and begin using Scratch.

 

August 12: Module 1 Projects

Students will create their first, simple projects using Scratch. Projects may include a short space animation or a ghost-catching game.

 

August 19: Module 2 Projects

Students will further develop their programming skills by learning how to create their own blocks and use conditional through a variety of projects.

 

August 26: Module 3 Projects

Students will put their Scratch skills to the test by challenging themselves with a variety of projects or by creating their own project.

The first hour of the workshop is direct instruction where the instructor will cover the basics of block programming, focusing on a different aspect each session. In the second hour of each session, students will be able to work on projects using these learned skills and/or to work on their own scratch projects. Instructors will be present the entire time.

Session 1 is for students in 1st – 3rd grade. Session 2 is for students in grades 4th – 6th grade.

We ask that guardians drop off their children and pick up their children at the end of the session. We want students to be able to focus on the instructor and projects for the whole 2 hours of the session. You may hang out in the Discovery Cube or leave until the end of your child’s workshop session.

We suggest bringing a jacket, as the room where Code Club Cubed is held can sometimes get cold. Otherwise, your child does not need to bring anything to their session. We will provide all equipment/technology necessary for the Code Club.
