Do Mystique and Morph basically have the same powers?

Question

I’ve never watched the og X-men cartoon, so idk if that show already addressed that, but if not, it’d be cool if 97 explored this a little bit.

Is one’s power slightly/much powerful? Like does it last longer, or Mystique can also do the laser eye thing if she turned into Scott summers but Morph couldn’t do laser eye?

They are deceptively similar but with a key difference: Mystique's power is to transform into the most emotionally manipulative person she can (for her children she simply reverts to her real self) and Morph's power is to transform into fanservice cameos. Both are great powers overall as they make the story more fun.

Omg not the answer I was looking for but my mind is absolutely blown cuz you’re so right 🤯

Mystique can’t replicate powers

Ok I honestly thought Mystique was the more powerful one (cuz i can’t remember if she replicated powers in live action movies for some reason), but now I know!

Yet!

Mystique has the power to give herself physical powers by shapeshifting for years now in the comics.

And in X-men Blue, there's a retcon that Mystique doesn't just shapeshift, she actually rewrites her genetic code when she does it. It is implied it's possible the only reason why she never copied another mutant's powers before, was because she still doesn't know her actual power so she never tried

Though Morph in the comics may still be more powerful because he doesn't even need to stay a solid.

This week's episode shows Morph as more powerful than Mystique has ever been.

Morph gains the physical abilities of who he's morphing into, Mystique doesn't. Deadpool's wife, Vanessa aka Copycat, is a more powerful mutant shapeshifter than both of them though. She gains their powers too.

Oh whaaat I didn’t know that! Holy shit what a power couple.

Also I’m ready for the attack: is the girlfriend in the live action Deadpool movies Vanessa? I absolutely don’t remember her name, if she is, I wonder if they’ll do her origin storyline

Edited

Yes she is. Though they haven't made her into a mutant in the movies.

Pretty sure Mystique grew an extra pair of arms in her solo and Morph copied six-armed Spiral and those arms were functioning and had the new musculature to operate. I think Morph is more powerful. We saw him mimic Quicksilver and move super fast so again it looks like he shifted his musculature to his legs to allow him this superpower. I don’t think he copies powers outright like Synch or Rogue but radically alters his physiology to mimic powers.

I notice morph replicate abilities. Can he also replicate omega level abilities?

I think we only see him do physical abilities so far, so not sure if he is replicating abilities or just changing his body to give himself the structures needed for those abilities.

Like maybe he doesn't actually need to change into Quicksilver because he isn't actually copying him, but it's a way for him to focus his mind into giving himself the muscles and nerves superspeed by thinking of a speedster he knows.

The 'problem' you run into here is that both characters have been written inconsistently by multiple writers, and their powers are practically godsend plot devices for any story, comic or animation.

Mystique's had more extensive development, and there have been at multiple versions of Morph (original/AoA/Exiles comics, XMAS and now '97) which barely resemble each other and throw him wide open to anything.

So really, the answer to your question is 'whatever the writer wants them to be'.

Mystique in the show can change her form to non-humanoids, but Morph can take the powers of whoever he turns into. Mystique's ability is more flexible, while Morph's is more powerful.
