Ellie Butler's mother, Jennie Gray, who has been convicted of covering up her daughter's murder and child cruelty, did not know her own mother had died on the first day of her trial.

Gray sobbed in the dock as her lawyer Bernard Tetlow QC said she had just found out about her estranged mother's death.

He said: "I have been passed a letter from the police indicating that on April 19 during the course of this trial her mother Linda Gray died.

It appears from the contents of the letter that the family - and that can only mean the father Neal Gray - did not wish Jennie Gray to be informed of her mother's death and it is only now at the conclusion of these proceedings that she has been told about it.

"So on the day of her conviction today she has been told for the first time her mother has died."
