Is Glamping in Tulum Worth It?

Tulum is a great destination for glamping.

Tulum is situated on the Riviera Maya coast with beaches with white sand beaches and clear water that sit right against dense jungle.

The best glamping destinations make you feel like you are far from civilization- you can relax and hear nature all around you, whether that is waves crashing on the beach or the wind blowing through the jungle.

The area around Tulum is ideal for giving guests this natural experience.

You do not have to travel far from town to find yourself in the thick jungle or next to the beach.

The Tulum is known for cenotes, or freshwater sinkholes that connect to a massive underwater river system.

Cenotes are filled with refreshing fresh water and great places to go for a swim or snorkel.

Several of the Tulum glamping sites have an onsite cenote, or one close by to visit.

The natural beauty of Tulum makes it a great spot to disconnect and go glamping and there are plenty of glamping places to choose from.

Glamorous camping can mean a lot of things and you will find glamping sites that range from basic and comfortable to downright luxurious.

Many glamping sites use creative materials and building methods to create airy accommodations that let you feel connected to nature but also have comfortable beds, and amazing bathroom facilities.

So, yes, glamping in Tulum is worth it. You can have a one-of-a-kind experience sleeping in a dome, bubble, or treehouse where you will relax and experience nature.

Glamping lets you take the best parts of camping- listening to waves crashing on the beach at night and feeling far away from civilization, with all the modern comforts to have a restful, enjoyable vacation.

A beach in Tulum near the hut and hammock.

🌴 Relax on the White Sand Beach

The amazing beaches are what initially drew visitors to the Tulum area.

The Tulum shoreline stretches for over 10 kilometers of pristine beach with soft white sand and clear turquoise water.

The water in Tulum is generally calmer than the beaches in Cancun, making it ideal for soaking and swimming.

Plus, the weather and water stay warm all year round, so you can enjoy the beach anytime.

Today you can find several Tulum beach clubs along the beach or access the beach at one of the public beach entry points.

What to Pack for Tulum Glamping

Since the idea of glamping is to give you a luxurious camping experience, you will not need to worry about packing things like sleeping bags, tents, or camping equipment.

In fact, most glamping sites provide seriously comfortable bedding!

Your accommodations will take the hard part of camping away, letting you relax and enjoy your time in nature. This makes your job of packing a lot easier too.

Here are some essentials you will need for your glamping experience:

✔️ Lightweight, comfortable clothes.

You will be spending a lot of time outside and most of the year is hot in Tulum. You will be the most comfortable in lightweight materials.

Tulum is a beach town and anything goes for fashion, and you will find a lot of people out at restaurants and clubs dressed in a seriously fashionable beach bohemian style.

So, even though you are glamping, do not be afraid to throw a few fashionable beach outfits in your bag.

✔️ Lightweight raincoat or sweater. You might be surprised that you need to add an extra layer in the evenings, especially if you are traveling in the winter months.

Come prepared with a lightweight raincoat/windbreaker or sweater.

✔️ Comfortable shoes. If you plan to do any hiking at the ruins or cenotes a comfortable pair of hiking sandals or sneakers will be better than slippery flip-flops.

✔️ Reef Safe Sunscreen. Most glamping destinations focus on eco-friendly tourism.

Bring your own biodegradable, reef-safe sunscreen to use before getting into the cenotes or ocean.

✔️ Eco-friendly bug repellent. Staying in the jungle means that seeing a few bugs will be inevitable.

Most glamping hotels will have mosquito nets and other eco-friendly ways to keep mosquitos away, but it is always a good idea to have bug spray just in case.

✔️ Waterproof phone case. If you plan on doing any water activities (even just sitting by the pool) having a case to keep your phone protected is a good idea.

✔️ Swimwear. This will be an essential part of your Tulum wardrobe as you enjoy the beach and cenotes.

✔️ Hat and sunglasses. Keep yourself safe from the sun with these essentials.

✔️ Yoga gear. Tulum is known for its vibrant yoga scene, so make sure to pack your yoga clothing so you can join a class or two.

✔️ Beach essentials. It is a good idea to bring a beach bag, lightweight towel, paperback book, sun protection, and anything else you need to have a relaxing day at the beach.

In addition to this list, you will need to take your passport and any medications you need with you.

It is always a good idea to purchase trip insurance, and if you plan on scuba diving, make sure to purchase dive insurance.

You do not need to take a lot with your glamping. You can leave expensive designer clothing and jewelry at home.

And remember, the most important thing to take with you on any trip is your sense of adventure and open-mindedness.

Tulum Glamping Tips

If this is your first time glamping, there are a few things you should know.

📌 First, glamping is not like camping in that you do not need to know how to set up a tent or start a fire to have a good time.

Your hosts will work hard to make sure you have an enjoyable vacation and a relaxing connection to nature.

📌 Before booking your accommodation, it is good to do a little research and have an idea of what kind of experience you want to have.

Tulum has glamping locations that sit nestled between the jungle and ocean, or locations that are in the jungle.

Some jungle locations even have an onsite cenote for you to enjoy.

Once you know where you want to stay, you can start to think about what kind of accommodations you would like.

📌 Glamping ‘rooms’ come in a lot of different forms. You can stay in a luxury tent, bubble, pod, or eco-friendly bungalow.

If you want to be able to see the stars shining down on you all night from your bed, you will need to look at staying in a pod or bubble.

Some accommodations have air conditioning, while others just have fans. You will need to decide which of these options works for you.

Some accommodations have a private bathroom, and many offer private outdoor showers for guests to enjoy. Others have shared bathrooms.

📌 Once you have decided what you want, make sure to book your accommodations early.

Many glamping sites only have a few rooms. If your heart is set on a certain type of accommodation, you will need to book early to make sure it is available.

📌 Lastly, go with an open mind and be ready to really enjoy the natural beauty of the area.

Glamping became popular because guests wanted a more intimate experience with nature, without giving up a good night’s sleep. Enjoy this unique and fun experience.

Things to Do in Tulum

Tulum is located about an hour and a half south of Cancun.

In recent years it has become popular with travelers who are looking to get away from the big resorts in Tulum and enjoy the endless beaches and natural beauty.

Today Tulum is known for having great restaurants and music and is a popular place to visit to practice yoga and go to wellness retreats.

There is no shortage of things to do in Tulum, here are a few things you do not want to miss.

🌴 Swim in the Cenotes

Cenotes are freshwater sinkholes that connect the surface to a complex underground river system and run all over the Yucatan Peninsula.

Cenotes are an important part of the history of the Yucatan Peninsula and the ancient Maya believed they were the gateways to the underworld.

Today you can visit countless Yucatan cenotes while visiting the Yucatan Peninsula, including many that are near Tulum.

There are three different types of cenotes: open, semi-open, and closed.

Open cenotes are like a natural pool in the middle of the jungle. They are usually in a beautiful setting- surrounded by trees and are great for swimming in.

Semi-close cenotes let you snorkel and swim inside them and see the amazing rock formations they have.

You can rent a car in Tulum and explore off-the-beaten-path cenotes or take tours to visit cenotes.

Some glamping locations even have an onsite cenote for you to relax by and swim in.

However you choose to visit them, you do not want to miss the experience of visiting a cenote.

Mayan Ruins

🌴 Explore the Tulum Ruins

Tulum is not only famous for its white sandy beaches, but also its rich history and Mayan ruins.

The ruins here are unlike other Mayan ruins because they sit on a cliff overlooking the ocean.

This was the only city that the Mayan people built on the coast- most other cities relied on cenotes for their fresh water.

Tulum was an important port for trade from all over Central America.

Historians believe that jade, turquoise, ceramics, and textiles were traded here.

The Maya people inhabited the Tulum ruins from around 1200 AD to the 15th century when historians believe this site was abandoned as the people moved into the jungle.

The Tulum ruins sit just to the north of downtown Tulum and are easy to get to in a rental car, taxi, or even bicycle.

No trip to the area is complete without a visit to these fascinating ruins.

You will enjoy spectacular views of the ruins overlooking the sea and have the chance to learn about the history and culture of the area.

You have several options for how to visit the ruins, you can go on your own.

There are tour guides available on-site, if you want to get a more in-depth history of the site, or you can walk around by yourself.

Or, you can book a tour of the ruins. Tours will include a tour guide who will explain the history of the site to you.

Most tours combine a visit to the ruins with snorkeling in Tulum and a visit to a nearby cenote.

View of the oceanfront in Tulum filled with huts.

🌴 Enjoy Water Adventures

The famous beaches of Tulum offer a lot more to do than just lounge around.

Once you have had enough time to relax on the beach, you can check out some of the best water adventure activities the area offers.

Just off the coast of Tulum is an incredible coral reef.

You can sign up for a snorkel tour that will take you out to the reef where you will swim in the clear water and see the colorful corals and marine life.

There are countless species of fish, rays, and sea turtles in the area.

If you want to take your water adventure a step further, you can sign up for a scuba dive.

Tulum is great for certified and beginner divers.

Dive shops offer an intro to scuba diving course for new divers that will cover the basics and get you into the water to enjoy the coral reef up close.

If you prefer to stay above the water, Tulum is a great spot to paddle board or kayak.

Or, if you want to learn a new sport, sign up for kitesurfing lessons.

Kiteboard enthusiasts travel from all over the world to enjoy flying across Tulum’s turquoise waters.

🌴 Try Some Mexican Foods

Over the past years as Tulum has grown it has developed a reputation for being a foodie’s paradise.

Today Tulum has amazing restaurants where you can try everything from traditional flavors to Mexican fusion.

Many restaurants here cater to their guests’ desire for locally sourced, organic food and use traditional cooking methods to make regional specialties.

The result is that Tulum has some of the best, most interesting, food in all of the Riviera Maya.
