  • the:pawn.project is a musical experiment involving two core members, M.D. and Nic, along with a revolving cast of guest musicians/nonmusicians. The project was founded in 2004, and underwent many incarnations before the current setup was reached in 2008.the:pawn.project achieved some level of exposure with their remix of Me, I'm Not, entitled (Void Mix), which was hosted on the open source Nine Inch Nails fan remix album "The Limitless Potential". Unlike much of the other songs on the album, (Void Mix) was an even split between electronic and live instruments, and turned the monotone original into something reminiscent of The Fragile and Still. It was an apparent success, with many people comparing it favorably to the original, and some going so far as to say it was "something the original was not. Beautiful."Pawn has been working in secret on music almost nonstop since the release of The Limitless Potential. There have been multiple albums in the works, with each one pushed to the backburner as new techniques and new equipment are utilized. As of 2009, there are plans to release all of the music created so far under four different albums: Disassociative, Static, My Ship Is Sinking, and Space Demos. The reason for this is because the:pawn.project does not conform to a singular style. For every ambient electronic track created, there's an industrial track, a metal track, and a progressive rock track. Both core members are involved in multiple side projects, though M.D. is more public about his involvement in other bands. Current projects involving M.D. are Heliodon, Chemical Beatdown, An as yet untitled metal band, and Grave. Most of Pawn's music is done digitally, with Ableton Live, Logic, and Nuendo as the three core programs, and a large assortment of plugins, including T.C. Electronics, Waves, NI, BFD, iZotope, and Antares. Live gear includes PRS, Warwick, Gibson, Marshall, Mesa/Boogie, Ibanez, Pearl, Zildjian, and Roland. All music is recorded, mixed, and mastered at Pawn Studios, owned and operated my M.D. Pawn Studios offers 32-track, 24bit 96k recording, with high-quality equipment such as Apogee and RME converters, Soundcraft Mixers, Blue Sky monitors, B.L.U.E., AKG, Sennheiser and Shure microphones, and AKG headphones. Pawn Studios also has a portable recording rack for on-location recording up to 24 live tracks, with much of the same gear the studio uses.
