In a significant announcement just ahead of the Cannes market, Italian filmmaker Stefano Sollima has been tapped to direct the high-octane action-thriller "Sugar Bandits." Known for his gritty narratives and intense storytelling in projects like "Without Remorse," "Sicario: Day of the Soldado," and the critically acclaimed series "Gomorrah," Sollima is set to bring his unique vision to this latest venture.

"Sugar Bandits" is based on Chuck Hogan’s novel "Devils In Exile," which also forms the basis of the screenplay. The narrative follows a former special forces soldier, portrayed by Oscar winner Will Smith, who leads a covert team dedicated to eradicating the drug trade in Boston.

This role adds another formidable character to Smith's impressive filmography, building on his legacy in action-packed dramas such as "Bad Boys." The project is a collaborative effort between Westbrook Studios and AGC Studios, with the latter fully financing the film.

Production is slated to commence this fall, with additional casting still underway. The film's global distribution rights are represented by AGC International and CAA Media Finance, who will continue their sales efforts at the Cannes market.

Smith and Jon Mone through Westbrook Studios are producing the film, with Ryan Shimazaki overseeing the project. AGC's Stuart Ford and Richard Abate from 3 Arts Entertainment are also on board as producers.

Sollima’s long-time producing partners, Gina Gardini and Ludovico Purgatori, are set to executive produce and co-produce, respectively. Sollima's recent works continue to explore the intricate interplay between law enforcement and criminal enterprises.

His latest projects include the Italian Netflix series "Il Mostro," based on the true story of The Monster of Florence, and the film "Adagio," which debuted at the Venice Film Festival. His previous credits include directing Michael B.

Jordan in "Without Remorse" and leading the ensemble cast of "Sicario: Day of the Soldado" with Benicio Del Toro and Josh Brolin. The legal and business facets of "Sugar Bandits" were handled by AGC's EVP of Legal & Business Affairs, Anant Tamirisa.

Representing the talent, Sollima is managed by CAA and Brillstein Entertainment Partners; Smith is also with CAA, while Hogan's interests are represented by WME, 3 Arts Entertainment, and Goodman Genow.
