U.S. Rep. Dan Meuser defeated Democratic challenger Gary Wegman in the race for Congress in Pennsylvania’s 9th District.

Unofficial results updated early Wednesday morning showed him ahead with more than 70% of the vote. The Associated Press called the race just before midnight.

Meuser has 206,257 votes to Wegman’s 80,696 votes. It is unclear how many precincts have not reported nor how many mail-in votes are pending.

“It looks like the numbers right now have us up considerably,” Meuser said Tuesday night before the lead grew.

The 9th Congressional District includes all of Columbia, Carbon, Schuylkill, Montour and Lebanon counties, parts of Berks and Northumberland counties and western parts of Luzerne County.

“We worked real hard. We had a great team,” Meuser said as he was getting information on the early results. “I think we told everyone what we were going to do, and we did it. I supported President Trump’s agenda that was in the interest of Pennsylvania.”

Prior to winning a seat in Congress, Meuser was president of Pride Mobility Products in Exeter and served as state revenue secretary. He was elected two years ago with almost 60% of the vote against Columbia County Democrat Dennis Wolff, a former state secretary of agriculture.

His challenger, Wegman, is a dentist and farmer from Berks County.
