Hotel Shanker, Kathmandu is a heritage hotel, housed in a 19th-century palace in the heart of Kathmandu city. It was the royal residence of the rulers of Nepal, from 1894 until 1964, when it was converted into a hotel. The facade and traditions were kept intact but the interiors were redesigned to give travelers the kind of comfort they'd expect of a world class hotel. The hotel is characterized by exquisite and authentic objects d'art. For example, the carved windows displayed in the lobby bar are over 200 years old.

Detailed Reviews
This is a gem in central Kathmandu. Minutes from Thamel. It's full of character and lovely helpful staff. As a base before and after a trek it can be recommended. The garden and pool area are a tonic, especially to escape the hustle and bustle of Kathmandu. Spa treatments especially the massage are wonderful. We have stayed on two occasions and would return.

Thank you describing our property as a little oasis! A lot of effort goes into maintaining the Old World Charm of our hotel, which was formerly a palace of Nepal's ruling elite. We are happy to hear that you enjoyed our Spa treatment. We welcome you to come stay with us again and again! We recommend you join our Rewards program though (available only by invitation only. Please mail us requesting an invite!)

I stayed at the Shanker Hotel for three nights. It is about a half mile off the main road and about a 15 minute walk from Thamel. It is wonderfully quiet. The hotel is elegant and well maintained. The staff goes out of their way to make sure you enjoy your stay while there. I asked for a quiet room and got one. The breakfast buffet, which comes with the room has excellent variety and good quality. I ate fruit at the buffet and did not have to worry about getting sick.
I came back from a two week trek to Everest Base Camp. The hot showers and flush toilet were magnificent!

This was my eigth trip to Nepal. I have stayed at the Shanker most of the times, compared to the 2 other hotels this was the best. I always feel like Im coming home. Its an incredible feeling when the manager remebers you and staff say hello. They are always helpful and sincere. I have been fortunate that early on I was directed to the Shanker. I hope my future has a couple of more trips to Kathmandu and the Shanker hotel. Thank you

I've heard this oasis analogy a few times, but it really is an accurate way to describe the Shanker. Kathmandu is dusty, dirty, hectic, and tiring for most people. Turn the corner into the Shanker's long driveway, and the noise magically disappears. The pool and garden area is calm and relaxing. The service is attentive and professional. Although the hotel is older, it's well maintained and full of character. Our full featured buffet breakfast was included in a very reasonable price. The travel desk was very helpful.
The half mile walk to the busy shopping, restaurant, and nightlife area is a bit trecherous due to the crazy traffic, but we navigated it safely several times in both day and night.

A group of 14 of us stayed here for four days after a ten day tour of Bhutan. After the tranquility of Bhutan, Kathmandu is almost anything but tranquil. But the Shanker provided a wonderful refuge from the hustle of the city. The grounds and pool area are quiet and inviting, and though cool, the pool was worth a dip. The customer service from front desk to breakfast banquet was outstanding. I had a business issue arise one evening and the front desk cheerfully scanned and emailed a document for me. They changed money quickly and efficiently. Room requests were completed with a smile. The baggage handlers were always smiling with a "namaste" greeting. Bottled water and coffee/tea are provided. It is easy to walk to Thamel or take an inexpensive taxi ride.
This hotel is used by a number of tour groups but these groups are handled so well that we never felt like the hotel was crowded. This was my fifth visit to Kathmandu and I would rate the Shanker as the best hotel visit to date.

The hotel is tucked away from busy Kathmandu streets and is something of an oasis with lovely gardens and pool.
The suite was well appointed and of good size.
The whole hotel looked to have seen better times with somewhat faded carpets and furnishings but appeared to be scrupulously clean.
The staff were friendly and attentive and served an adequate, though not sumptuous, breakfast buffet.

Amsterdam, The Netherlands43 contributions51 helpful votesThis hotel looks nice from the outside, has a nice garden where you can sit and read a book and a good swimming pool. The interior is a bit run down and there is quite a difference between the rooms. The first room we stayed in, on the second floor, had a double bed a small bathroom with unfinished electrical wires in it, and people working on the window and knocking on the window while we were in the room. On our second visit, we got one of the 'double decker' (split level) rooms with a double bed. This room had a very unpleasant smell, coming from the bedroom. When we told the front desk staff, we did get the room next door. Also a double decker room, but with twin beds and without strange smell.
On our third visit (room reserved through booking.com) we got a very nice room on the 7th floor, more spacious and in a better state than the two other rooms. But we also paid a lot more, compared to the other visits (when the room was reserved through our trekking agency, Himalayan Encounters).
It is only a short walk (10-15 minutes) to Thamel, but on a very busy road.
The breakfast buffet is good, a lot of choice, served in the basement (would have been much nicer if it would have been possible to sit outside in the garden). We found the packed breakfast not very tasty (dry sandwiches, some cheese, butter and jam, boiled eggs).

Thank you for taking time off and making us aware of some of our shortcomings. Nevertheless, I am glad to hear that you enjoyed staying with us on the whole based on the fact that you stayed with us on 3 occasions. I will let the Chef's team know that their work was much appreciated by you! (The breakfast box, particularly!)

I stayed here for two nights at the end of my Nepal stay - and I'm glad I did. The rooms were spacious, modern and spotlessly clean. The building is quirky - go for a walk and check it all out. The breakfast was the biggest I came across in Nepal and everything was fresh. Complimentary chocolates, fruit and flowers were a nice touch which wasn't expected. The location is in easy walking distance of Thamel although at night can be a bit scary...only for the fact there are no street lights and the footpath isn't flat! (Its safe...I did the walk alone many times and always felt safe) But that's nothing against the hotel. I guess the only thing I'd say is I agree with some of the other reviews where some of the staff linger for a tip which is a bit awkward at times. But the service is great from all staff. Overall a great stay and would certainly stay here again.

We liked the friendly helpful staff, tranquil gardens to sit in, swimming pool, comfy beds and great breakfasts. It was just what we needed after trekking in the hills. You can walk to Thamel in ten minutes, if you can face crossing the manic roads - taxis and rickshaws are also available.

Yes, it's not a modern hotel, but that's the charm. Super-friendly and helpfull staff, in special the baggagers. Nice breakfast buffet, but the dinning room, really feels like a basement; the bar is not up to the rest of the Hotel charms.
Close enough to Thamel, but private enough - yes, you can still hear the horns while in the gardens. Great pool, and plenty of room to relax outside.
If and when I return, I will look for no other than this one - it's unique, confortable enough, and with the typical "charms" from a old world.
(yes, the piggeons do make a lot of noise, and sometimes pipes too)
