San Joaquin Memorial High School Reviews
Rating 3.59 out of 5 158 reviews
As a whole, the school is a place that prides itself on accelerated education, developed sports programs, amazingly connected teachers, and a well-curated community. However, the school has a severe lack of funding for music and arts programs, with the school's drama program only being restarted roughly three years ago and most funding for drama being given by outside donors or raised by the program itself. Additionally, there is a significant disconnect between the school and the higher levels of administration, with a decent number of students not knowing who their principal is.
The main thing you are paying for is connection the best thing is that you really get to know teachers. However there are various other problems such as rampant favoritism especially towards certain athletes and generally lack luster education compared to Clovis west, north, etc. Also often coaches are very inappropriate and to informal with players. I would also worry about the water polo and football program as I was pressured to do drugs on both teams.
Although Memorial is a college preparatory school, I believe there are many elements that fail to meet that standard. I have felt a sense of lacking when being taught in my math and science classes especially, and the environment is not friendly towards expressing creativity and and innovation. The academic push is aimed towards critical thinking, however there is an expectation on the student to learn complex concepts on their own with little to no help. I believe more money and time is invested in the school sports such as football than in the academic element of the school. There is no access to outlets that support STEM and research and is more focused on standard mathematics and science classes. The school environment is old fashioned and fails to improve and include modern elements and resources. It has sufficed in preparing me for college but there are several things to be improved upon.
