      What to Know

      Critics Consensus

After Earth is a dull, ploddingly paced exercise in sentimental sci-fi -- and the latest setback for director M. Night Shyamalan's once-promising career.

Larushka Ivan-Zadeh metro.co.uk Preachy, draggingly directed by M Night Shyamalan and just not much fun. Rated: 2/5 Sep 5, 2017 Full Review Chris Stuckmann ChrisStuckmann.com After Earth unfortunately still finds M. Night Shyamalan plodding through another dull, lifeless movie. Rated: C Apr 17, 2015 Full Review Anthony Quinn Independent (UK) The effects are second-hand stuff from Alien and Star Trek, spliced with Shyamalan's regular homilies on Personal Growth. Rated: 1/5 May 2, 2014 Full Review Brian Eggert Deep Focus Review Regardless of the potential here, a neutral, lifeless tone prevails over every aspect, from the direction to the acting to the special FX, but especially the dull script by M. Night Shyamalan and Gary Whitta. Rated: 1/4 Sep 6, 2022 Full Review Keith Garlington Keith & the Movies “After Earth” is a sleep-inducing bore that hasn’t the material or performances to rise above its faults. Rated: 1.5/5 Aug 19, 2022 Full Review Cory Woodroof Lumination Network This film is sometimes-brutal survival flick that doubles as a closet-clearing of emotion for a critically injured father and his petrified son. David T I liked it. Yes, young Jaden’s acting was not the best, but it was not horr in me either. I very much enjoyed the evolution of the parent child relationship, learning tje backstory through flashbacks, and I think the unique accents were a good idea. How people speak changes with time (listen to movie from the 1940’s!) contributing to the “not now” aspect. It also meant everyone spoke the same way regardless of skin color or rank or class. Where some complain about the cold mannerisms, I think this speaks to descendants of people who had a hard life living on a harsh af planet . Some logical shortcomings for sure (it is fiction, remember?) and there seemed to be an absiird concentration of inimical life on Earth. Some of this was filled, but a lot of the encounters played a role on the evolution of the father child relationship. The storyline and the clever usage of a created dialect, turn a slightly sub so so movie into a good yarn that I enjoyed Rated 4 out of 5 stars 05/16/24 Full Review Yesi det s After just watching it, I can tell it was an okay movie. The acting and a good part of the backgrounds were tacky and unprofessional, but the scenario is interesting, and this is a great approach of the post apocalyptic trope. This movie probably deserves more love, I personally keep a very fond memory of it from when I was younger. Rated 3 out of 5 stars 04/19/24 Full Review Paul A maybe the only movie I've ever seen that Will Smith was in that wasn't that good? Rated 2 out of 5 stars 04/16/24 Full Review alan g Horrible horrible horrible. Nepotism at its worst. Rated 0.5 out of 5 stars 04/12/24 Full Review Sujith M I God-blessed love this movie. It's seriously underrated. Rated 5 out of 5 stars 04/05/24 Full Review Spike G Terrible terrible terrible Rated 1.5 out of 5 stars 03/06/24 Full Review Read all reviews Post a rating
