Young Woman and the Sea is an American biographical drama film based on Young Woman and the Sea: How Trudy Ederle Conquered the English Channel and Inspired the World by Glenn Stout. It was released on May 31, 2024.

Synopsis[]

Young Woman and the Sea tells the story of Gertrude Ederle, an American swimming champion, who first won a gold medal at the 1924 Olympic Games. In 1926, Ederle became the first woman to swim 21 miles across the English Channel.[1]

On December 9, 2020, Deadline reported that a biopic centering on American competition swimmer and Olympic champion Gertrude Ederle was in development at Disney+.[2]

On March 14, 2022, Deadline reported that Tilda Cobham-Hervey and Stephen Graham joined the cast of the film.[3]

On May 4, 2022, Deadline reported that Christopher Eccleston joined the cast of the film in an undisclosed role, with filming beginning in early May.[1]

On June 18, 2022, Daisy Ridley announced that filming had officially wrapped.[4]

On January 26, 2024, Deadline reported that the film is expected to release on May 31, 2024 with Disney planning to release the film in theaters rather than on Disney+.[5]
