A 1990s-style sitcom in which a cutesy family (literally named the Christians) is home-invaded by a bloodthirsty Russian father and his two teenage sons. Krazy House’s jarring tonal shifts, the pitiless vision of a devastated society, and its ultimate breaking of the fiction’s ‘fourth wall’ illusion, seem to nod simultaneously to Haneke’s Funny Games (1997) and an array of pop artefacts. Not to mention the presence of Nick Frost (Hot Fuzz, 2007; Shaun of the Dead, 2004) as the religious family man, and Alicia Silverstone from Clueless (dir. Amy Heckerling, 1995) as the hysterical mother!
Krazy House is a riotous, extreme, unhinged comedy. It will make you gag in the double sense: in laughter, and in revulsion! In a film where truly nothing is sacred, religious values and icons are subject to relentless slaughter – as are love, work, family and all shibboleths of the past. The anarchic motto of the story is brazenly declared: “Kill them all!”
Popular Dutch creative duo Steffen & Flip serve up a heady brew here, skillfully passing from initial sitcom stylings to darker shades of gory horror. This will surely be the supreme cult movie of 2024!
