Japan for 35 days, best way to get around? 2024/5/11 13:30
Hello,

My partner and I have planned a 35 day trip around Japan and are looking for the most cost effective way of getting around. We also go in a few days whoops.

Our itinerary is:

Narita Airport - Tokyo, Tokyo (5N) - Nikko, Nikko (2N) - Tokyo, Tokyo (3N) - Hakone, Hakone (2N) - Nagoya, Nagoya (2N) - Kyoto, Kyoto (3N) - Nara, Nara (2N) - Osaka, Osaka (1N) - Kobe, Kobe (1N) - Himeji, Himeji (1N) - Okayama, Okayama (2N) - Hiroshima, Hiroshima (2N) - Osaka, Osaka (8N) - Kansai Airport.

I had a look online and the most days pass i could get was 21.. i also checked with the JR pass calculator and it said it was worth it for 5 days but not 21. Is it better just booking the trains separately then as wefre spending days in each place or?

Any help would be greatly appreciated, thank you!

You are not travelling anywhere enough for the national pass to work, and staying in one place almost a week makes the travel very slow. You also have some odd one-night stays in various places, but it is your trip.
Nikko - use Tobu, not JR.
Around Osaka (you have a lot of Osaka) local trains to Kobe, and Himeji. Also consider highway bus as the distances are not as far as something like Tokyo-Kyoto.
You could consider the Kansai/Hiroshima pass.

Yes, it is your trip, but as a Japanese, I would like you to consider some other places, as you have 35 days in Japan.

I like these places.

Somewhere in Hokkaido
Okinawa
Central Alps including Kamikochi and Tateyama Kurobe Alpine Route.

I'd steal a day from Tokyo and 4-5 days from Osaka, and hit northern Kyushu sights.

What time of year?
With 35 days there's no need to stick to what would be done in 14-21 days at a normal pace.
As much as I like Osaka, 9 days is way too much. I'd reduce it to 2-3 days.
Also, you could reduce a couple of days from Tokyo.
You're already doing what would be day trips from Osaka such as Himeji and Kobe, there is no reason to stay in Himeji, there's not so much there beyond the amazing castle and grounds.
You have so many options, depending on your preferences, a few ideas:
1) After Nagoya, explore more of Chubu (e.g. Gujo-Hachiman, Takayama, Okuhida, Kamikochi,Nagano, Matsumoto)
2) From Okayama, visit Kurashiki visit the inland sea islands such as Naoshima, Teshima and Shodoshima, or go to Onomichi (on the way to Hiroshima) and cycle the shimanamikaido for a few days to explore the inland sea islands there
3) Spend a week in Hokkaido or Tohoku or Kyushu, depending which appeals more (and time of year), they're all wonderful.

I'd try and visit at least one of the nice onsen towns, it's IMO an essential part of a Japan trip.
