Released as part of Rhino's celebration of Stax's 60th anniversary, Stax Classics is the first American Carla Thomas singles compilation since 2006's Stax Profiles. Where that 2006 set included her biggest hit, "Gee Whiz (Look at His Eyes)," this 2017 collection doesn't because the compilers take its title seriously: it only contains songs she recorded at Stax. This means it has "B-A-B-Y" and the Otis Redding duet "Tramp" -- her other two big hits, neither of which were on Stax Profiles -- along with ten other cuts, some of which were singles, some of which were not. What's interesting about Stax Classics is that it contains a lot of songs that don't usually appear on compilations, including "What Is Love?" and "I Play for Keeps," neither of which show up on 1994's gold standard Gee Whiz: The Best of Carla Thomas. Gee Whiz remains the better overall overview because it does contain the title track, but Stax Classics is an excellent listen and the best Thomas comp to be released since that collection.

In your panoramas...
Otis Redding, King of Soul

52 years ago, the soulful shooting star fell from the sky. At the young age of 26, Otis Redding had only had the time to release six albums. More than enough however to be considered as one of the greatest voices of the 20th century.

40 Years of Post-punk in 10 Albums

In the twilight of the ’70s, as the shrapnel of the punk explosion was still settling, the movement was already inspiring new groups. As New Wave unfurled, the post-punk movement represented a tortured, even radical turn. From pioneers Joy Division and The Fall to current bands Shame and Fontaines D.C., here’s a close-up on the landmark albums that electrified the entire music world and continue to fascinate the rock’n’roll underground.

Stax, Sounds Like The South...

Motown in the North. And Stax in the South. Two quite distinct conceptions of soul music. In the southern humidity of Memphis, Isaac Hayes, Otis Redding, Sam & Dave, Booker T and a few others invented a unique groove imbibed with blues and above all gospel.
