Ben Foster drops Wrexham transfer claim amid 'phenomenal' League One promotion prediction - The Wrexham Insider

Wrexham are gearing up for their first season in League One for almost two decades.

Phil Parkinson led Wrexham to back-to-back promotions for the first time in their history, shooting straight from the National League and into League One.

Currently, two promotions away from the Premier League, Rob McElhenney and Ryan Reynolds are edging ever closer to their dream of leading Wrexham to the top flight.

The Hollywood owners, though, understand there is a lot of work to do, as while they have set their sights on the Championship, the competition in the third tier next season is tough.

Birmingham City and Huddersfield Town are two of several clubs that could pose the Welsh side a challenge in their attempts to scrap for promotion.

It’s clear that while Wrexham’s core is laced with League One experience, Parkinson needs to bolster his ranks with depth and that is a notion shared by former goalkeeper Ben Foster.

Ben Foster drops Wrexham promotion prediction

Foster only played 12 times for Wrexham during his six-month spell at the club but he did make that penalty save against Notts County which eventually helped win them the title.

The 41-year-old announced his retirement from the game in August last year, and although he no longer plays, he still gives his views on the club as an outsider.

Foster expects Wrexham to invest in as many as six players in the transfer window and believes if they add a little bit more quality and experience to their ranks, Parkinson’s men will be embroiled in another promotion battle.

Speaking on Fozcast, the former Manchester United goalkeeper said: “I think they’re going to invest again in another four or five, maybe half a dozen players.

“Good players, solid people, solid professionals that are going to raise the standard just a little bit more.

“But I think that what they’ve got in that team anyway is League One level. If you can add a little bit more quality, a bit more experience, I think they’re going to be there or thereabouts next season.

“And to go back-to-back-to-back, I don’t know if it’s been done before, but it’d be phenomenal.”

How many players do Wrexham need to sign?

Wrexham are fortunate that most of their squad boasts League One experience, including previous promotion winner Elliot Lee, centre-back Eoghan O’Connell and midfielder Andy Cannon.

McElhenney and Reynolds must add to that core with quality depth, which would not only supply them with an array of options but also the capacity to make substitutions that could change a game.

Following the departure of nine first-team players and more expected, Parkinson has space in his squad to play with.

Wrexham’s initial priority will be signing a permanent goalkeeper, with Arthur Okonkwo topping their wishlist.

Then the Reds need at least two centre backs after waving goodbye to Jordan Tunnicliffe, Aaron Hayden and Ben Tozer.

Midfield depth is also imperative, perhaps investing in Portsmouth’s title-winning midfielder Joe Morrell and an attack-minded operator.

That leaves improvements required at striker, especially if Steven Fletcher decides against signing a new contract. Parkinson ideally wants a new strike partner for Paul Mullin to drag the Liverpudlian to even greater heights and alleviate some of the goal-scoring pressure.
