idk who works there now but when I was there a couple of years ago the dea n of admissions was very abl eist towards me as a disabled student. refused to make necessary accommodations, and viewed FERPA as a joke. I was antagonized for being openly au istic and needing more support than non-disabled students. Se ual har ssment was not taken seriously, and was prolonged and enabled by the administrations negligence. During what was supposed to be an anonymous report against another person on campus (who had several reports against them), used my full name and ye lled at me because he “didn’t like my tone”. Se ual har ssment was only addressed when thre at of phys ical vi lence was made, and even then not enough was done. I get if you’re LGBTQ+ it can be nice to be at a school with a large LGBTQ+ student body, but abl eism and se ual har ssment are a huge problem, despite the school’s “progressive” image to try to persuade left leaning prospective students into applying
KCAI has incredible, knowledgeable faculty who provide amazing educations and opportunities for students. Through KCAI I have also been able to connect deeply with Kansas City’s art scene. The end of semester show opportunities are really unique and give students the opportunity to curate and build a show, display their art to the greater community, and even make some money selling pieces! I think our “Foundations” year (freshman year) could use some work in its curriculum. Students usually come out with completely different skill sets, sometimes completely unrelated to their actual goals or majors.
Kansas City Art Institute has been an absolutely amazing experience for me as a current student. The rooms are primarily two to a room and are quite comfortable, even having options for people with hearing disadvantages or other disabilities. There are only four floors in the dorms so in the chance that an elevator does brake, it isn't a completely horrible thing. There is also a parking garage that you can store your car in so you can keep it safe. The area around the art institute is absolutely amazing. There is an art museum barely even a block away and the plaza is a place that is full of fun stores and shops to look through, many run by small businesses. The only downside for the school is the food and that it is a requirement to purchase the meal plan if you live in the dorms. Other than that, the teachers and faculty are amazing and I would definitely recommend coming to this school.
