KCAI has incredible, knowledgeable faculty who provide amazing educations and opportunities for students. Through KCAI I have also been able to connect deeply with Kansas City’s art scene. The end of semester show opportunities are really unique and give students the opportunity to curate and build a show, display their art to the greater community, and even make some money selling pieces! I think our “Foundations” year (freshman year) could use some work in its curriculum. Students usually come out with completely different skill sets, sometimes completely unrelated to their actual goals or majors.
Kansas City Art Institute has been an absolutely amazing experience for me as a current student. The rooms are primarily two to a room and are quite comfortable, even having options for people with hearing disadvantages or other disabilities. There are only four floors in the dorms so in the chance that an elevator does brake, it isn't a completely horrible thing. There is also a parking garage that you can store your car in so you can keep it safe. The area around the art institute is absolutely amazing. There is an art museum barely even a block away and the plaza is a place that is full of fun stores and shops to look through, many run by small businesses. The only downside for the school is the food and that it is a requirement to purchase the meal plan if you live in the dorms. Other than that, the teachers and faculty are amazing and I would definitely recommend coming to this school.
Overall I've found most of the courses I took to be valuable. I didn't particularly enjoy freshman year, as, even though we had the opportunity to explore other interest before pursuing our degree of choice, I would have rather taken classes that were relevant to my degree than explore other options. However, that's just a personal opinion. I know plenty of students who were able to explore other directions they didn't know they were previously interested in, so I think it's a helpful choice. Aside from that, I enjoyed the classes I've taken so far. We're allowed creative freedom while still being able to learn, and we're also exposed to various other opportunities on a regular basis for continued learning, mentorships, internships, etc.
