The Vampire Diaries star Paul Wesley has had just as complicated a love life as his character Stefan Salvatore.
Of course, he isn't a 160-year-old vampire who fell in love with a 500-year-old vampire and who raked in his fair share of women throughout his long life, but still, Wesley has dated around. At least he isn't the guy who'd pine over Elena Gilbert for five seasons and then fall in love with Elena's best friend, Caroline Forbes.
But it turns out he is a person who likes to date his co-stars, just like another TVD alum, Ian Somerhalder, who dated Elena Gilbert herself, Nina Dobrev, for three years.
In fact, Wesley's dated two of his TVD co-stars, just like another TVD alum, Candice Accola King, who secretly dated Zach Roerig (Matt) and Steven R. McQueen (Jeremy) for a couple of months. Who didn't date on set, really?
We thought Wesley's relationship with Phoebe Tonkin would last longer than Somerhalder and Dobrev's, but unfortunately, we were wrong. Now Wesley is married and going on double dates with Dobrev, totally freaking fans out.
Updated on March 16, 2022: Although it's been nearly five years since Paul Wesley and Phoebe Tonkin broke up, fans have never forgotten the beloved Vampire Diaries couples. Unfortunately for those fans, it seems as if things are really done for good this time between the two actors. Paul Wesley has been happily married to Ines de Ramon since 2019, and Phoebe Tonkin has moved on with boyfriend Alex Greenwald.
Nevertheless, fans have remained hopeful that they will see their favorite couple reunite onscreen in the Vampire Diaries spinoff Legacies, but unfortunately, that's not likely to happen either. Both actors have definitively stated that they do not want to appear on the show.
Haley Marshall's Love Affair With Stefan Salvatore?
The complicated nature of Wesley's love life stems from the fact that he actually entered TVD as a married man and started dating Tonkin very close to the time of his divorce. Wesley started dating Torrey DeVitto in 2007, two years before he debuted as Stefan and after they co-starred in Killer Movie.
They got married in 2011 in a private ceremony, and the next year she joined her husband on TVD as Dr. Meredith Fell for 12 episodes in season three. Unfortunately, their marriage ended when their divorce was finalized in December 2013. But according to Bustle, Wesley started dating Tonkin in July 2013. Granted, he was already separated from DeVitto, but isn't that timeline a bit sketchy? As far as we know, Welsey and DeVitto split amicably and remained friends.
Coincidentally, DeVitto and Tonkin both made their first appearances on TVD the same year, though in separate seasons. Tonkin debuted on the show as Hayley Marshall, a werewolf who has a secret agenda. As we know, she left TVD to become the leading lady in the hit CW series' spin-off The Originals.
During Wesley and Tonkin's four-year relationship, both of their Instagrams showcased how in love they were. But other than those glimpses, not much is known about the couple because they kept everything under lock and key.
Although, Tonkin did talk about Wesley to Elle Canada in 2015, saying, "He’s my best friend. It’s such a fun time in my life right now. It’s nice to have someone to share all that with." Unfortunately, their relationship turned out to be just as unsuccessful as Wesley and DeVitto's.
Paul Wesley And Phoebe Tonkin Started An On-Again Off-Again Relationship
In celebration of TVD airing its last episode in March 2017, Tonkin shared a photo of her, Wesley, and the rest of the cast and crew.
"I cannot believe tonight is the last episode of #thevampirediaresever," she commented on the Instagram post. "You guys have been my family for the last 5 years, Julie and Kevin, thank you for inviting me onto the show in season 4, I owe so much to you guys and this incredible opportunity you gave me, my life would most definitely not be the same without it, and I am eternally gratefully." Tonkin probably had no clue that her relationship with Wesley would end that same year.
Trouble for the couple started in March 2017, when they seemingly split for a time and quickly got back together a month later. During that first breakup, many sources told Us Weekly that the couple had moved out of their shared home, but when they got back together, they soon began "hooking up" and were being friendly" towards each other.
They were spotted holding hands in May, but their second attempt at romance didn't last long. They called it quits for good in October of that year and quickly unfollowed each other on social media (we can't seem to find the many photos Wesley posted of them together either).
The ex-couple kept the details about their breakup just as private as they kept their four-year relationship. Following their breakup, Tonkin took a job on Safe Harbour, back in her native Australia, so maybe that's what broke them up? Or maybe Tonkin just wanted to return home after being heartbroken. Either way, she starred in another Australian show called Blue, so it seemed as if she was enjoying her time back home.
Tonkin finally opened up about her relationship with Wesley, but she didn't name names. She told Elle, "I'd gone through a break-up last year, and I wanted to branch out and explore other things, and Furlough felt like the perfect opportunity to do that." The short film ended up being Tonkin's directorial debut.
"There's a lot of change, but it's good change," she continued. "Everything has sort of fallen into place...I just feel more confident [now] in myself and in my passions." Oddly enough, Wesley has also gotten into directing.
We'll probably never know what exactly split up the couple, but it looks like they are happy at least. Wesley married Ines de Ramon in 2019, and Tonkin appears to be dating singer Alex Greenwald. We just wish that they could have found a cure for their troubled relationship.
