The converted 1880s carriage house is so unique! My room was spacious, comfortable, and quiet; I appreciated the feel of stepping back in time for the night. Breakfast in the main house was elegant and delicious - the spiral ham and cheese omelet was a standout. The whole experience was indulgent and delightful!

We were visiting Cedar Rapids and really didn't want to stay in a typical common hotel downtown, so looking online I found this exquisite B&B just a couple miles out of downtown. Really, one would never find this place by driving around. It is on the very top of a hill on a dead end street. All around it are smaller modern type homes and apartments. The owners Shelley and Ken are wonderful hosts who are about half the charm of staying here. The 3 available rooms are located in the restored carriage house which is done so beautifully on the inside that one would never know that it once housed buggies and horses. We stayed in the Heisel Room on the main floor, but we were the only guests, so we had a chance to look at the other two rooms as well. It is very quiet here on the hill and we had a very restful sleep. Breakfast was a 8:30 AM, but I asked if we could have coffee earlier. Shelley was so nice, she brought over a full pot of coffee and cream at 7:30 AM for us. Breakfast was great in the main house at their big dining room table. We had a great time talking about their restoration work, their antiques and life in general. They have owned this place for 23 years and made it a showplace from being an abandoned home when they bought it. I would highly recommend staying here to anyone. Great location, lovely stay and super nice hosts. Thanks Shelley and Ken!

My family (2 adults, 10, 8, & 2 yr old) stayed at Belmont Hill for one evening. We are typically AirBnb-ers, but wanted to try something different our last night of vacation, and it did not disappoint!

The hosts were incredibly welcoming. The beds were seriously the most comfortable we have ever slept on, and the historic charm was breathtaking. Not to mention the fancy served-on-china breakfast was delicious! I appreciated how they accommodated my 2 year old as well, who got tiny silverware and plates and her food cut up on and served on sturdy wooden high chair.

For the same price as a hotel or an AirBnb we got an experience that we will never forget. Our family had plenty of room, a wonderful night sleep, a delicious breakfast, and we even got an education on the historic Iowa Derecho of August 2020 from a family who experienced the heartbreak first hand.

My family cannot wait to visit this special bed and breakfast again!

It truly is as though we have stepped into a little magic tucked away in Cedar Rapids! Time moves a bit slower here, and the gracious hospitality of Ken and Shelly is where credit is due. Their carriage rooms are comfortable and delightful, the garden is inviting and beautiful, and Shelly's breakfast leaves you happily full for hours.
Further, they are taking many precautions with COVID, and we felt completely safe. The rooms were sanitized with UV lighting, social distancing is practiced, and everything was clean and welcoming. We highly recommend this slice of peace on Cherokee Drive.

We spent 6 nights at Belmont Hill. We were blessed by experiencing the gracious hosts, pleasant surroundings and the quality of their business. The property and service were exactly as described on their website. Shelley and Ken are attentive to the needs and desires of their guests. Their knowledge of the area and property is wonderful. The rooms are comfortable and well appointed. Rooms are made up daily and finding those chocolate nuggets each evening was a treat. Breakfasts were superb with fresh fruit, hot entree and toast, and capped by a delicious pastry. If you are ever in Cedar Rapids, consider staying here; you will be glad you did. We certainly will.

Ken and Shelly display Midwestern hospitality on a high level. Why would you stay at some corporate run hotel or a perhaps “iffy” Airbnb when there is such wonderful, welcoming, gem like this to experience? Their diligent care for this historical home and surrounding gardens; the homey, spotless rooms full of lovingly refinished turn of the century furnishings and appointments and — the super tasty, beautifully plated, hot breakfast in the main house with other guests you get to chat with checks more boxes than I knew I had! This is my third say here over the last couple of years and it has been the same every time and has turned into a home away from home as I’ve made trips back to the “homeland” to see family (I grew up here, but now live in Southern California). Every Bed and Breakfast place I’ll stay at will always be compared to Belmont Hill.

In the restaurant business, consistency is the key to success. How many times have we visited a restaurant after it received rave reviews only to return one year later to discover the food was not on the same level as it was upon opening?

In the hospitality business people seek consistency too, that is why chain hotels are successful; people know what they can expect at a given price point.

We took an Iowa road trip in 2021 and stayed with Ken and Shelley. They were generous, gracious hosts who were never intrusive. The breakfast was what is now fashionably called elevated. You will be surprised every morning at the quality and inventiveness of the breakfasts.

When we arrived it was as if it was only last week when we were there. Ken and Shelley are authentic people so it comes as no surprise that they are consistent! We were elated as we discovered the suite as she brought us into to it; it is the entire top floor; spacious and highly recommended.

Breakfast was once more as wonderful as we remembered as was their company.

The next day there was heavy snowfall and we were snowed in. We received a call from Shelley who asked, to our surprise, what we would like for lunch; she even offered choices and then carried everything over to us complete with a surprise dessert!

Although we were frustrated at not being able to leave, we were treated to the sight of deer in the snow; all the while Ken was shoveling so we would have a clear path to the main house.

In the evening when we were able to leave, Ken shoveled around our car so as to make exiting the property easier.

The next day was a full house and as before never the same breakfast twice. I am at a loss to describe what we had only that the eggs were shaped like a pinwheel and had a delicious filling. We are not snobs but we are foodies and have high expectations. Here again the food was consistently inventive.

People are fond of quoting Emerson “consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds” but they omit “A foolish consistency is the hobgoblin of little minds…”

What more can you ask for than to be with people who are consistently great, meeting and exceeding your expectations on all levels? This is a rave review because it is deserved.

This was truly one of the best places we have ever stayed. Accommodations are clean and elegant in the renovated carriage house on Belmont Hill. Even though it has a Victorian feel, the modern amenities are still there: satellite TV and WiFi were free and worked flawlessly. We streamed movies and shows while we were in the room without any issues. The owners are good people who provide privacy and delicious breakfasts! I would recommend a stay at Belmont Hill to any of my friends and family visiting the Cedar Rapids area. It's also a convenient drive to the Field of Dreams movie site and the Palisades and Kepler Park which is quite beautiful. If you are trying to decide between one of the lower rooms or the suite, splurge a little. The suite is great!

This is an absolutely amazing bed and breakfast. We stayed there for 4 nights and every morning we were welcomed with an absolutely delicious gourmet breakfast with a wonderful selection of fruits and an unprecedented plate decoration! It is all about presentation! But the food tasted wonderfully. We stayed in the large suite and the two beds were very comfortable - every afternoon we had a few chocolate pieces to enjoy, too! The whole home is sparkling clean - no dust, the towels are so soft!
In general, I cannot wait to be back. My 9-year old daughter was treated like a little princess by the owners and she cannot wait to be back, too.

my wife and I always try to go someplace special for Christmas Eve as we have 4 grown boys... We decided to try Belmont Hill as it was new to us as well as being a great location. We were not disappointed. We had a nice, clean, comfortable room decorated just beautifully for Christmas. The breakfast was delicious, and Ken and Shelley were wonderful hosts; very accommodating, and really just made us feel very special. I cannot recommend enough.
