The Omni San Diego Hotel garners praise for its friendly service, though some guests have experienced issues with problem resolution. Nestled in a prime location, the hotel is a favorite for its proximity to the Gaslamp district and other attractions. Despite the comfortable beds and quality amenities, opinions on value diverge, with many guests feeling the costs outweigh the benefits, especially given the dated rooms and ongoing refurbishments. While the cleanliness is widely lauded, the hotel's renovation work and noise have led to calls for discounted rates.

We stayed here for one weekend night when we arrived in San Diego through a great rate ($129) from travelzoo. The same room on subsequent nights was going to be $250+, so we changed hotels afterwards. It is very near the Gaslamp District and walking distance to Horton Plaza. We also walked 20 min. to the harbor to catch a harbor cruise the next morning. Parking was ridiculously expensive at $26/night with no option for self-parking. There is some construction nearby for the Hard Rock Hotel, so street parking is very limited. You can probably get street parking, but you'd have to walk at least 1/2 to 3/4 of a mile to find it. We were on the 19th floor and could still hear the trolley train whistle with our windows closed. The Omni Select membership gave us free wireless internet access, choice of morning paper and morning beverages. The front desk did not give us the morning beverage order form, I had to ask for it and then go downstairs to get it. The room itself was very nice -- modern and clean with good lighting and very nice toiletries.

We have stayed at several of the top hotels in the San Diego area and our week at the Omni proved to be a great success. First of all location, location. The hotel is situated in the Gaslamp district which is pretty much where you will find all the best restaurants and shopping that downtown San Diego has to offer. It is a 10 minute walk to the Marina just past the massive Convention Center .
The service at the Omni is excellent. The front desk staff is courteous and efficient and as usual it is the little things that one remembers. A child in our party was having one of those "my loose tooth won't fall out upsets" and this lovely girl at the reception ran to get her an apple to bite into and sure enough out flew the tooth!

The pool is situated a few floors up on a rooftop and is a very pleasant and uncrowded way to relax after a busy day sightseeing.
Valet parking was quick and worth the expense. (You are not going to fing parking around there anyway). We also enjoyed the restaurant McCormick and Schmicks, although the breakfast buffet was discontinued while we were there. But the cuisine was good including the late supper menu.

San Diego and environs is an amazing playground both for children and adults.

Bar none, the best hotel in the city. Better than the Manchester Grand Hyatt, which is nice as well. Much better than the Marriotts and a better value than Hotel Solamar. I am from San Diego, and have stayed at dozens of local hotels for one reason or another, and this one takes the cake. The rooms are extremely modern, comfortable, and clean. They have a very sleek feel to them. The location is easily the best place to stay in the city as well -- because it is close enough to the Gaslamp restaurants and bars without being right in it, so you tend to stay away from the noise while being a few blocks away from everything.

If you book a 4-Star Hotel in the Gaslamp through Hotwire, you more than likely will get the Omni at a highly discounted rate. Be nice and ask the front desk upon check-in for an upgraded or high level room, and they will most likely give you whatever is available. Parking is a bit spendy, so if you are staying at the Omni not on a Padre game night, park across the street in the multi level garage. If you are there on a game night, suck it up and valet because you won't be saving more than a couple bucks parking across the street or anywhere else downtown.

Location, value, friendly staff, quick valet, energetic feel, and some of the nicest basic hotel rooms contribute to this being the best option in downtown.

We stayed at the San Diego Omni in April 2007 while attending a conference at the San Diego Convention Center and the location could not have been more convenient.

The hotel is directly across the street from the convention center. It is also located at the edge of the Gaslamp Quarter, making it within an easy 5 minute or less walk to dozens of many great restaurants. Also, McCormick & Schmick´s Seafood Restaurant located in the Omni hotel was excellent! The dinner we had there was some of the best food we have had anywhere. They are also open for traditional breakfast too, although we did have the chance to eat breakfast there.

The Omni staff were all very friendly and courteous and the hotel itself was very clean and well-maintained from what I could tell. Our guest room had a beautiful view of the bay and was tastefully decorated, quite comfortable, with a quality king-size bed.

I used the pool and hot tub several days and nights. The regular pool was kept very warm when we were there, like bathwater, and it was very relaxing, especially in the evenings. They also had a decent fitness center, with complimentary fruit.

The the only negative, which others have mentioned here too, is the lack of privacy of the bathrooms in the rooms. There were plantation style shutters separating the bathroom and the bed area and while they could be closed, there was absolutely no sound privacy at all. If you are at all shy about such things with who you are sharing the room with, you may want to make use of the public restrooms located in other areas of the hotel. I did. I think the bathroom design, while visually interesting, was not very practical and may turn off some people.

Other than that, everything else was great.

The Omni San Diego is a nice hotel. That being said, I don't think it was as nice as some of these reviewers (and I'm not sure it's the best hotel in the city). The hotel is relatively new and the location is very close to the Gaslamp quarter, which is nice and the Convention Center. The coolest thing about this hotel is that it is connected to PETCO Park. It could not be easier to watch a Padres game from this hotel. From the fourth floor there is a bridge that takes you directly into the park. After the game was over I was in my hotel room in 5 minutes. That was really neat.

Although room service is 24 hours, the menu becomes extremely limited after 10pm and this is a definite drawback, as I couldn't get anything sweet when I got in late at night. The staff was okay, I thought the concierge was particularly bad. My room was good; I really have no complaints about it.

Definitely, sign up for Omni Select Guest like other reviewers said. It gets you free internet, complimentary morning beverage and paper service and more.

Overall, good hotel and I'd come back.

I stayed at the Omni with a colleague for 6 nights during a conference in early May, 2007. It came out "two thumbs up" for my three main hotel priorities: good staff, cleanliness, and proximity to attractions.
The staff were professional, courteous, and highly efficient. The concierge with constantly helpful with directions, maps, restaurant suggestions (Rama, the Thai restaurant, is a MUST for an outstanding lunch). When one of our bags was waylaid by Air Canada, two toothbrushes, paste, and other assorted essential toiletries appeared in our bathroom. We were impressed.
The cleaning was impeccable. The room was well cleaned daily and the pool and fitness areas were also tidy and well cared for. The pool water, when accidentally ingested, was a little reminiscent of pee, but I think that was probably unavoidable due to the conference resulting in tons of kids in the pool at a time.
Finally, the proximity of this hotel to all things important and exciting in San Diego CANNOT be overemphasized. Due to the layout of the convention center, we had a shorter walk to the conference (maybe 200 yards) than our colleagues staying at the Marriott (which is actually ATTACHED to the convention center, but at the far end of it). We were on the edge of the famous Gaslamp District with its excellent shopping and restaurants, a short (10-15 minutes) walk to Seaport Village, the dock, and the fabulous Horton shopping complex (complete with Nordstrom's and many high-end small boutique stores), and a moderate walk (30-40 minutes) to famous Balboa Park and San Diego Zoo. The hotel location is conducive to pedestrian travel.
Of course, no review is complete without a critique or two. The elevators were so slow as to be the subject of many amused (and not-so-amused) comments by guests. On our longest trip we made a full NINE stops between the lobby and the 19th floor where we were staying. We were told that this was related to the unusual volume of conference traffic. The restaurant/lounge was a little expensive even by San Diego standards (we didn't try it as a result). Our "conference rate" for the hotel seemed somewhat exhorbitant at $USD 239 (although comparable to other local hotels at that time). The hotel-supplied hair conditioner is atrocious, bring your own.
In summary, this is a well-cared-for, well-run hotel with staff who are a real asset to Omni. Highly recommended if you can get a reasonable rate.

Before we managed to escape from the Bahia hotel I managed to book the Omni hotel for $100 on priceline for the next 2 nights ( same price as Bahia 100 times better). Checkin went very smooth , we got some input what room we wanted . Based on the reviews here I decided to get one away from the rail track.
This meant the back of the building with a view over Petco park, but unfortunately I could still see some of the rail track as we had a corner froom with 2 windows. The freight train did pass by a couple of times each night and it did not really bother us - and I am quite a light sleeper.

The location is perfect , 100 m walk to the gaslamp quarter.
Parking can be done in the parking structure across the hotel for $ 12 a night when there is a game on and less if there is no game. However it does not allow you to get your car in and out. This works well if you are out and about during the day and return in the afternoon in the hotel and then go out in the gaslamp quarter.

I thank the reviewer that mentioned to sign up for their Select Guest program. Do that online when you book the hotel, quote the number upon check in and enjoy complimentary fresh hot and cold beverage in the morning + a paper. You can buy bagels or crossaints to go with that and all of a sudden you have a cheap in-room breakfast.

If there is a game on you will have to wait until 10 PM to get to sleep, but that is not a problem in this part of town.

The room was spacious and well laid out. Yes, the bathroom doors are still there, but you'll get used to that.
Internet access for free with your laptop at a reasonable speed.

All in all, one of the better hotels we stayed in during our vacation in SW USA.

It is rare to have the opportunity to view up close a truly superior and well trained staff in the American hotel industry. I had this opportunity at the Omni San Diego this past week. I almost did not stay here due to parking and location issues but was glad I made the decision to be an Omni guest. Two very qualified concierges manned the information desk at most all waking hours and they were full of suggestions and could field an answer for almost any need. The housekeeping and front desk and valet parking people were equally helpful and always friendly. The lobbies, public spaces, pool and gym were all very attractive and well maintained. The rooms were
very comfortable with perfect mattresses, better sheets than I have at home, robes, supplies, etc. I liked the "louvered doors" which slide open to make the bathroom sort of a part of the room, (but I can understand the reasons some reviewers might feel this compromises privacy). I did notice, that even though the hotel is pretty new, it must be getting used a lot by the baseball and convention crowds (Hotel sits between the baseball stadium and the convention center) and there was some minor carpet wear, tiny hole in comforter, and wear on the chair. Hopefully the management will catch these things before they begin to drag the place down. There are a couple of other glitches but none would stop me from staying here again. As most people mention, paying $26 for parking is a drag. However, I must say that the valets had my car to me in no time and in-and-outs are included in the bill. Some friends paid $15 for a parking deck a block away but could only take the car out once a day. The nearest free street parking looked to be about a 20 minute walk away, up by Balboa Park. The other problem mentioned by members of my group is the blowing of a whistle or horn by a nearby freight train in the wee hours of the morning. I heard it but quickly went back to sleep. You might discuss this when making reservations and ask for a room facing away from the train location...but then this might also knock you out of a view of the bay. If you have one, you might consider taking along a battery powered "white noise" machine which masks out sounds of the night. I forgot mine this trip. (You can get these at places like Sharper Image). Despite these glitches, I heartily recommend this hotel. It was a great experience. My rate was $131 (but it was a group rate for my conference/class so I can't comment on the relative value of normal rates). I found that the hospitality spilled over to the hotel restaurant, McCormick and Schmidt. Though a little pricier than I would have preferred, I had a good meal there and they honored a special diet request with good cheer.

This is not my first stay at this hotel, but this is the best experience I have had to date.

Everything was very prompt, from the time I pulled up to the Valet, to the time I entered my room, it took less than 10 minutes.

The bell staff was very attentive and prompt with delivery of my luggage. I had also brought my pet along with me on this trip and everyone was very friendly and sincere when dealing with her.

The only thing that went wrong was my room when I first checked in. The room had not yet been made up, it was a mess. The front desk manager was up within minutes, apologizing and quickly escorted me to another room. Because of their error, they upgraded me to a corner room at twice the size of my original booked room. This room also had a balcony. All at no extra charge.

After settling in, I took my dog for a walk along the marina and when I returned about an hour later, I was surprised to return to my room with a few extras. They had delivered some doggie treats for my pet, provided me with a fresh bottle of water for my pet and as a way of apologizing for the earlier snafu, they had given me a nice bottle of wine and a box of chocolates along with a hand written apology and thanking me for my patience.

Now, This is how a guest should be treated at an establishment when the hotel has made a screw up. I am very very pleased with this experience and I would recommend anyone coming to San Diego to book their room at the Omni.

(the rooms were clean and very well decorated, and the bathroom issue that I have read here in the past has been resoved and they hvae replaced the bathroom doors so that they give total privacy now.)

We were very pleased with the location of this Omni! Only a
2-minute walk from the San Diego convention center and many reataurants/boutiques of the Gaslamp Quarter. VERY safe area. This Omni has an impressive collection of baseball memorabelia. Be sure to see Babe Ruth's contract.

Staff were very friendly and helpful. Views from our 7th floor were terrific. Cleanliness was excellent and floorplan posed no problem for us. The upscale McCormick and Schmidt restaurant is on-site--attracting lots of weekend diners. McCormick & Schmitt also serves a bountiful on-site breakfast.

We reserved our Friday night accommodation with a Priceline bid of approximately $110. BARGAIN! The entire hotel offers FREE wireless internet, however, valet parking is $25. per day. Adjacent public parking garage is $15. per day but no in/out privileges.

One small concern were the trains running throughout the night, adjacent to hotel. No noise problems on our floor (#7), but lower floors could present problem for light sleeper?
