This year’s show is directed by Dr. Stephen Torquato, USCHS social studies teacher. He and the show’s creative team selected “Newsies” for its large cast and the upbeat message of the show.

“With nearly 40 speaking roles and a large ensemble that is the heart of the production, we are able to showcase students throughout the entire show,” Dr. Torquato said. “Additionally, ‘Newsies’ is a fast-paced show with a timeless message of teamwork, dedication, and empowering student voice.”

Nearly 130 students are involved with this year’s musical production, including on stage, on the crew, or in the orchestra pit.

“Students are involved throughout the entire creative process – from building and painting sets, to fitting/designing costumes, and teaching blocking/dancing to their peers,” Dr. Torquato said.

Students have the opportunity to take on leadership roles that include Student Director, Student Stage Manager, Student Producer and Dance Captains. As a member of the Student Leadership Team, students work with and learn from the adult members of the creative team throughout the process.

“It was important to the creative team that we develop an educational experience for our students that teaches them not only the love of being on stage but also the love of the process of bringing a show from page to stage,” Dr. Torquato said. “It is our hope that we continue to foster a love of the performing arts in all of its forms in the students at the high school.”

Based on the classic 1992 Disney film of the same name, “Newsies” is even bigger and brighter on stage! With a humorous and heartfelt book by Harvey Fierstein and an energized and engaging score by icons Alan Menken and Jack Feldman, “Newsies” is a family-friendly show that will have everyone from 8 to 80+ tapping their feet and humming along with the students on stage! With key numbers from the film, including the show-stopping “Seize the Day,” the power ballad “Santa Fe;” and fun new songs like Katherine’s “Watch What Happens,” Medda’s “That’s Rich,” and Pulitzer’s “the Bottom Line,” “Newsies” is a classic with the power to inspire!
