• The Orwells

  They might take their name from the master of the surreal and the post-modern, the author George Orwell, but the truth is, there isn’t necessarily anything hugely forward-thinking about The Orwells; instead, they focus on good old-fashioned punk and garage rock, and they do a seriously good job of it, too. Since forming in Elmhurst, Illinois, five years ago, they’ve taken their irrepressibly energetic live shows all across the world, packing out intimate clubs and taking to huge festival stages with equal aplomb. Key to their success in the live scene is the sheer energy of their frontman, Mario Cuomo, who roars his way through material from their two records, Remember When and Disgraceland. Meanwhile, Dominic Corso’s guitar squeals its way through their sets, and there’s a very obvious bond between the individual members of the band and their cult fanbase when they’re up on stage; banter in between songs, raucuous singalongs and the almost cult-like reverence that the band are held in by the hardcore are all testament to that.

• Finally saw The Orwells at The Leadmill in Sheffield on 29.08.17 after being a fan of the band for a while and they definitely didn't disappoint! They sounded great, got the crowd fired up, and delivered on the rock 'n' roll mythos of The Orwells as Mario shoved a stage invader who broke a microphone stand back over the barrier before Mario stormed off not to be seen again. The remaining members played their own closer and finished with a bang as an audience member was passed one of the guitars and the venue went mad with noise and cheering. Great show, venue, and I eagerly await seeing the band again!

• Wow 3rd time seeing The Orwells and again they don't disappoint. Great atmosphere brilliant songs and a jumping crowd. Venue seemed to get the crowd a little wrong though. No barriers and little security meant it was a little crazy on some of the racer tracks. Dirty sheets was a real crowd pleaser and what's your only option when your mic stops working?? Well if your lead singer Mario you do some crowd surfing. If you only see 1 band in 2015 make sure it's The Orwells and I'll be there for the 4th time I loved it.

• Great show! The Orwells are always a good time. Mario Cuomo was out of his mind (like, on something) last time I saw them in SF, which was in November at Bottom of the Hill. He was more tame this time, but still brought a ton of energy to the show. Small but energetic mosh pit too near the stage. The band's sound was focused on noise, which is exactly what you want to see from The Orwells. Great setlist as well - good mix of new and old songs.

• Everyone was pumped to be there. My first time at the new record bar, which looks super suave now. Lots of fun. This app or whathaveyou says I have to type more... The lead singer is very "look at me." Kinda made me think of David Bowie. Over the top but lots of those in the crowd loved it.

• Holy fucking shit that was a good show. I was in the front row trying my hardest not to get trampled as mario cuomo looked into my eyes and sang to me. He's the weirdest yet most awesome leader singer and performer I've seen so far. Please come to DC again soon!

• It was such a good show. I've been wanting to see them for a long time and it was definitely worth the wait. The venue was really cool too. Make sure to wear clothes you can move around in because the mosh pit can really move.

• We went to the gig as fans and left as bigger fans. The Orwells have the songs and rock n roll attitude needed to fill a venue with a vital energy. I look forward to seeing them again either on tour or at festivals.
