Product Description
Academy Award winners Al Pacino and Helen Mirren star in a new HBO Films production written and directed by Pulitzer Prize-winning and Oscar -nominated playwright David Mamet. Phil Spector is Mamet's exploration of the client-attorney relationship between legendary music producer Phil Spector (Pacino) and defense attorney Linda Kenney Baden (Mirren), who represented Spector during his first trial for murder. The film is executive produced by Academy Award winner Barry Levinson and David Mamet and produced by Emmy winner Michael Hausman. An HBO Films presentation of a Levinson/Fontana Production, the film also stars Emmy nominee Jeffrey Tambor and Golden Globe nominee Chiwetel Ejiofor. In the hands of celebrated playwright, screenwriter, author, director and producer David Mamet, Phil Spector is a mythological story, and he approaches it as a mythological story, rather than as a news story. Mamet begins his film with the card, "This is a work of fiction. It's not 'based on a true story.' It is a drama inspired by actual persons in a trial, but it is neither an attempt to depict the actual persons, nor to comment upon the trial or its outcome."

Throughout the movie, the Spector character bemoans the fact that he is being singled out because he was successful; that past great personalities were similarly persecuted because they were "too big for their britches." In addition, his character proposes that there is no reportable news unless a person of character is perceived to deviate from their "normal" behavior. Whether or not the real Spector said this, the movie just proves this point; apparently, all of Spector's previous accomplishments were not enough to warrant a bio-pic, but the "crash and burn" moment of a successful--albeit eccentric--man, were.
Motivation and necessity of this movie aside, I was somewhat surprised of the caliber of casting. Helen Mirren does a fine job of portraying Spector's attorney--though we may never really know what the real attorney's feelings and contributions were, as this film was a "drama inspired by actual persons." Al Pacino (!) plays Spector. He does a good job of portraying an eccentric character, but I never got past that this was Al Pacino in essentially a made-for-TV movie.
There's no suspense in this movie. It ends rather abruptly and then includes summative sentences to explain what happens after the events portrayed in the movie. This film did nothing to move me emotionally regarding Spector or Lana Clarkson. If a film cannot add something to someone's legacy, evoke empathy, or stir conversation, then what's the point?
More than 24 different jurors over 2 separate trials have deliberated this case and Mr. Spector is in prison where he belongs.

I even thought the actors, who obviously can pick and chose the parts they play were silly for doing it. Even to the point that it may impact negatively on their flawless careers.
I was wrong about all my preconceptions. The story was captivating, from the opening scenes to the roll of the end credits.
In fact I was sorry when it ended, the time spent watching it went so quick, and although it was 92 minutes long, it was so good it seemed to last about half the time.
The acting was brilliant, from both Helen Mirren and Al Pacino, as you'd expect. But the whole cast and team deserve top marks also.
The film has changed my mind about Phil Spector. I always loved his music, and still did up to the time of the accusation of him being a murderer, the negative press coverage and various other books, that he was a freak and a bit of a psychotic monster. All that sort of killed the moment as far as the great music he produced in the 60's went.
Anyway, this movie has changed my whole way of looking at him, and this is one if the greatest gifts watching this film has given back to me. I now realise I have been wrong to have judged him so harshly. Especially on hearsay.
He has a certain eccentricity, but behind the eccentricity there is a gentle, sweetness about him, an intelligent and wise person but at times with a childlike innocence too. Although in a more mature way than the Michael Jackson way
Whether he was guilty of the crime, or not, I don't know. I was certain that he was, and almost hated him for it. But after watching this movie I have serious doubts that he was guilty. He was cruxified by the media, and even though, as someone who adored his music, thought he was guilty, and was better off the streets. I no longer think this way.
I think he got a bad deal, and hope he will get justice. Even if it's only an early release.
Buy this film, it's anything but lightweight, or flimsy (as I thought it would have been), it's a well thought out and absorbing trial drama, it's a story about the lawyer and the person she's defending. It makes a strong case, and makes you think. Any film that makes you think is worth every penny...absolutely brilliant.
