One of the best queercore bands of the american northwest(if not THE best)that sadly only did 2 albums. These women sing about being who you are and taking no shit from anybody and you don`t have to queer or female to enjoy this record. There`s a couple of songs that don`t work but mostly it rocks. This album deserves more ratings then it`s got here on RYM so go get it!Thanks to Goregirl for suggesting them to me.

Yes captain, yes captain
We're gay AND angry.
Captain My Captain is the second and last album by the sadly short lived Queercore band Team Dresch. It is one of the best Queercore albums you can find. The guitars are tight, the drumming is tight, the singing is tight, I'm tight.
It's witty, sarcastic, and sometimes a little heart wrenching. On the nose? Perhaps. But that can be forgiven when everything is this catchy and energetic. It won't change your life, but you'll have fun all the same.
Get you some of that 90's themed queer coded puck rock.

Gay and angry: the album
I had no idea queer themed punk had its own subgenre, but I really appreciated this first listen. The arrangements are well made, especially the chord progression choices and the bass lines. The bass tone especially sounds great and was probably my favourite feature about this album. The lyrics range from being hilarious to bittersweet sarcasm about LGBT rights and struggles. You'll have a song talking about suicide that almost got me in tears, and then a few minutes later they'll hit you with some hilarious stuff like the lyrics for "I'm illegal". Sometimes they're a bit too on the nose, like: "my mother says she loves me [...] but I don't think she does, cause she only says she loves me when i act just like she does, AND THAT'S EMOTIONAL BLACKMAIL". Yes, we get it, you didn't have to explain it. But at the same time I see it as a quirk that makes this record more unique and even gives a sort of sense of "rawness" and desperate will to be innocent again.
Overall it's a great work that offers some very catchy stuff while still being witty and ironic to the core and nailing the 90s style of sound. Very much recommended.

Intense guitars, sharp drums, playful bass. Shame I wasn't the most adventurous music wise growing up cause this one of those albums that I would've played on loop in high school. The bass and vocals remind in particular of the pixies while the guitar and drums got a very 90s punk vibe but even more intense. Basically a perfect blend of a lot of my specific tastes in scrappy 90s rock music but pushed further in the exact direction I wanted. Doesn't really do anything new but fuck sometimes you just need a real short and sweet record with no frills.

Okay, so here's the reason I will never be any kind of a punk: on the first track there's the absolutely killer line "My mom says she loves me / But I don't think it's love / 'Cause she only loves me / When I act just like she does"... but then that's followed up with "And that's emotional blackmail!" Which, like. You didn't need to explain it! Spelling out your meaning in big letters so that no one gets confused makes for great politics but terrible art.
Although this album also gives us "Chain me to the bed / Now unchain me from the bed", which is couplet worthy of Poly Styrene. And "Queer sex is great / It's fun as shit / Don't worry Jesus is dead / And God don't exist"... well those are just words to live by.
Also the sound is significantly tighter and more rockin' this time around. Maybe because of the new drummer? Anyway this is a much more pleasant listening experience than Personal Best.
And finally, I keep wanting to say something about how this album is "cringe" or "dated", but... look, the last twenty years have taught us that messages of personal identity formation and self-determination are really vulnerable to being co-opted by people who want to sell you things. But what now I think I need to learn is that that doesn't mean that they're bad messages.

A bit of a letdown after the songwriting royal flush of their outstanding debut, but that's only relatively speaking for the most part. While poppier, mellower and occasionally a tad bloated, you're still signing up for a solid share of their unmistakably emoish all-girl, all(?)-LGBT post-hardcore, with the occasional pinnacle moment of mathy punk finesse such as The Council.

An instant favorite for me. So many of the lyrics hit home, and I loved this band already...it's just very good and i like it a lot :)

This really is one of the finest punk albums I've heard. There's a warmth here that isn't so common in punk. They play very well - there's a good deal of dynamics across the 11 songs here. All 11 songs are great, and the vocals complement the music very well. Everything feels so natural about this album, it's not particulary harsh or angry but it still has a great punk attitude. They just preached positive messages of equality and sang about being gay in the 90s. I just don't get tired of these songs. And all in a neatly tied 35 minutes! What's not to love!
