Todd slices up choice morsels of hard rock, pop, and soul and sandwiches them together with bizarre studio effects. A wizard has emerged!

This is my favorite Todd Rundgren album. Fantastic classic rock and roll.

I cant add a lot to all the 5 star ratings here, I first bought this as a record when I was young and it was new, I nearly played it to death it was like nothing I had ever heard, I ended up buying all Todds earlier records but this one is THE ONE that did it for me.
I bought this c.d. when I ran accross it here at Amazon, the music is everything I remember, but, it is the worst copy of a c.d. I have ever heard, the sound was bad, it skipped, it had dropouts I was disappointed to say the least.
I contacted Amazon, they are cross shipping a replacement, I will update this review when I hear the new copy I am really hoping it was just a bad copy, no one else here seems to have had issues with the disc itself.
Upsate: Yep, it was that disc, got my new one and yes, problems resolved, this IS the album I bought and remember and yeah, love. You want the obvious you'll get the obvious, yeah Todd, in 3 out of 4 of your first albums, but not here!

I'm only reviewing this because Amazon sent a link to me asking for a review. First of all, there's no need for me to review what many (myself included) consider a classic album. Also, since this is the first CD copy of AWATS that I have ever owned, I cannot compare it to previous versions. So...
This CD / sacd does sound very good to my ears. Excellent mastering and no harshness at all. I have heard some cuts from this disc on a Rhino compilation from many years ago, if memory serves me well, this CD is a definite although subtle improvement. Now, I need to continue to upgrade my Todd collection so if anyone has any recommendations as to certain CD versions being superior to others, please share that info with me and all the other TR fans.

I ORIGINALLY WROTE THIS WHEN I WAS ABOUT 19 AND ON A HUGE TODD RUNDGREN KICK. I HAVE SLIGHTLY REVISED IT SLIGHTLY SINCE THEN TO PULL IT MORE IN LINE WITH MY CURRENT VIEW OF THE ALBUM. THE REVIEW MAY STILL SHOW SIGNS OF IMMATURE TASTE OR YOUTHFUL OVER-ENTHUSIASM.
Fans of the light-hearted pop of "Hello, It's Me" and "I Saw the Light" beware, this is a genre-bouncing, boundary pushing, fever dream of an album that manages to baffle at every turn... Which is exactly why it is absolutely brilliant. If you've absorbed Something/Anything and you're ready for the harder stuff, this is where to go next. This is the sound of Todd spreading out and letting his mad scientist mentality take control. To be entirely fair, not all of the songs are as memorable as on Todd's previous outing and the second side is a bit slower than the first. However, Todd's production here is far beyond what was even hinted at on Something/Anything. An essential purchase in Todd's catalogue and probably his greatest album.

Great to hear this album from start to finish on a CD. Loved this record when it came out. Rundgren at almost the peak of his creative genius. He was still evolving as an artist and continues to this day, but on this effort he was bringing his creative touch to not only masterful songwriting and playing, but to producing and engineering as well. Touches of TSOP and his past ( Nazz) , as well as humor and bravado.....really hard to encapsulate, which is probably just how Todd would want it. He's never been afraid to color outside the lines, both with his subsequent solo work or with Utopia. Sometimes he can be a difficult personality, but in all things musical he is truly a "wizard, a true star".

Bear with me... for some unknown reason I haven't listened to AWATS in probably 20 years (could be due to no LP player for past 15 yrs). I suddenly get the urge to buy the CD. It arrives, I put it on and....Here is one of my hands down favorite albums. I'm instantly back to 1973 (I listened to this album over-and-over again). I came upon TR through some friends that had Nazz and Nazz, Nazz; TR became one of my listening mainstays (I remember once my friends and I calling TR's office in NY to try to pursuade TR to get the Nazz master tapes and re-release Nazz 1&2 [1971? or 72?], but that's another story).
Back to AWATS. Here is one of the most uplifting, energy infused, joyious visits to TR land I can think of. 30 years after it's release and it still sounds fresh and new; electronic, blazing guitar, unbelievable keyboards, humorious, witty lyrics, and impecable production.
Even in this collection a few songs stand out: International Feel, Zen Archer, When the SXXX hits the Fan/Sunset BLVD (tied with I Don't Want to Tie You Down as album best), IDWTTYD, and Just One Victory.
Don't wait, BUY THIS CD NOW !!!

I love this cd. When it was on record, I think Todd crammed more music on vinyl then anybody else. This is not a singles record like "Something/Anything" rather, it needs to played all the way through. The first half are mini songs, then he goes into eccentric, middle eastern and soul stuff and then, ends it with "just one" victory.
The mini songs are great (I wonder where guided by voices/minutemen got their ideas?) I developed an appreciation of soul music b/c of Todd.
International Feel is such a great 1st track (with a chorus that goes "But theres more...")
I am a big Todd fan yet I will not hesitate to criticize him ("Liars" is horrible). "Something/Anything", "Wizard" and "Hermit of Mink Hollow" are his 3 best works (throw in Utopia's "Oops Wrong Planet" and "Another One live").

They just don't make 'em like this anymore

I first bought this in the 1970s as a vinyl album and thought it was the wackiest thing I'd heard since Spike Jones. Actually Spike Jones was probably funnier but let’s face it he didn’t write hit songs by the dozen. Here the songs are scattered throughout a stream of rock n roll consciousness, played, produced and edited largely by Todd himself. It was actually his fourth solo album since his short-lived stint as a member of The Naz, a so-so American pop band whose output could never had hinted at the genius in their ranks. In this beautifully crafted, end-to-end chaos (there are no track breaks) we have soaring rock anthems (e.g. Just One Victory) mixed with double-take inducing goofiness (e.g. Just Another Onion Head), leaving you with the sense of listening to Gilbert & Sullivan on acid. Added to this is the quality of the musicianship, from both Todd and his few contributors. Like other artists in ‘zany’ vein (The Mothers of Invention, Bonzo Dogs etc.) such eccentricity can never be carried off without meticulous timing and virtuosic skills. If you've never heard this album before I guarantee the playing will leave you breathless, even if you don't like the album. I think that in this case it really is true to say they don't make 'em like this anymore. Play it loud, laugh, rock and sing your heart out.

Unappreciated classic album!

Fantastic, classic album that deserves to up there with the best of them! Rock, soul, psychedelica, you name it! I have been listening to this album since 1973 and never tire of it! You can't judge this album on 1,2 or 3 listens. Like fine wine, it gets better with age. There are lots of flash in the pan artists with big hits that after a few years you never play the album again. Not Todd. Give this album a listen and keep an open mind. It's great!
