ULTIMATE FIX FOR DEVICES STUCK ON SETUP! (Including Sideloading!)

It's an amazing day for the BB10 faithful all as we finally have a FULL AND COMPLETE FIX FOR DEVICES STUCK ON SETUP! I have confirmed this works on the Z10, Classic, and Passport and have every reason to believe it will work across all devices. The fix also does more than simply get you out of setup (permanently)--it also restores the ability to sideload so you can use native BB10 apps!!!!

NOTE: All credit goes to Leo who first made me aware of this fix and certain additional resources I discovered while testing and refining it. The ultimate source of the fix is a blind BB10 user who discovered it while troubleshooting. This fix isn't mine but I can confirm it works!

SECOND NOTE: If you have already connected to wi-fi before trying this, we recommend you run an autoloader and start from scratch. DO NOT connect to Wi-Fi until this fix is completed--you will have issues if you do so.

  1. Start up your device and proceed to the "Connect To A Mobile Network" screen.

  2. Press the Power button of your device three times in quick succession. You will hear a short chime if successful. (You may need to try pressing the Power button three times and then tapping the screen quickly with two fingers.)

  3. You will then see (and hear) a pop-up informing you the Screen Reader software has been turned on. Double-tap with two fingers to enable the software.

  4. Press Skip on the cellular connection screen.

  5. You will hear the Screen Reader start reading off comments about Blackberry ID, even though you will see the Wi-Fi setup screen that you've been stuck on for weeks. Wait until you heard the Screen Reader say "Skip" then IMMEDIATELY double tap the screen at the top right (where it says "You need a data connection to continue"), then swipe to the left with one finger. Repeat this three times.

  6. You should see a pop-up allowing you to skip BBID creation. Tap Skip (Screen Reader will inform you to tap it twice to proceed.)

  7. You will then go to the standard BBID sign-in screen. At this point you can turn Screen Reader off by pressing the power button three times in quick succession again.

  8. Select "Skip" on the BBID screen.

  9. You will either see a Regional Settings or Software Update screen. (Most likely it will be Software Update, so that is what I will follow, but if you see Regional Settings let us know and we'll help out.)

  10. Software update will take a VERY long time but will eventually tell you it can't connect to Blackberry infrastructure and offer you the option to swipe left or set up Wi-Fi. SWIPE LEFT! (We don't want to go back to that Wi-Fi screen....)

  11. You'll then see an Automatic Updates notification; tap OK.

  12. You will then be taken to the standard gesture tutorials. Complete those and you're done! You will find you will be able to sideload normally and use any native BB10 app you want.

Let us know if you have any trouble and we'll help out as best we can. And let's hear it our blind friend and VICTORY! In the words of Stacker Penthouse: today we are CANCELLING the BB10 apocalypse!

Hats off to everyone involved, this is an amazing discovery! Long live BB10!

Fantastic news! Well done to all involved. Long live BB10!!

u/Test-KimochiTM avatar

At step 5 I couldn’t hear the Reader say anything BBID, any idea about this problem?

Hmmm....did the Reader say anything at all?

u/Test-KimochiTM avatar

I have a video of my device https://youtu.be/FtdeVM0Ovb4

Might want to point out the issues I got regarding that.
It didn't told me anything about BBID until I put a SIM card in it...

Didn't put one at first, but for the time I did I think it did the trick. I finished it with the card in the slot as well, maybe that's what helped :)

Not sure if I went to the launcher because I paid more attention to what I was doing or because of that valid SIM (even though at this point the OS has no clue if it's active or not)

Sorry Test, just saw this. You also need to use an autoloader to reset the device to defaults. If it's already connecting to a wireless network (as it is in your video) these steps will not work.

Maybe the issue was because my reader didnt read anything at all? Only tell the instructions to click 3 times to turn off and when I click into a text only at that time the Reader reads, is there an option in settings where you can turn off or on the ability of the Reader to automatically read the whole text in the page?

Possibly but not before you get through setup. Do you have a Classic or other device that's already through setup or are you stuck there?

You shouldn't need to turn anything off if you start at the screen listed in the steps...

Would this work on Playbook without mobile data connection?

Great work! Thanks

I don't think so at the moment Busy but we're going to try it and find out (and pursue alternate means of getting Playbooks active if needed!).

Not my fix but I'm happy to refine it and publish it out to the community.

Any progress on the playbook front? Sorry to bring a thread back from the dead.

We do have a fix discovered by another (there's a post on it on the main sub) but I've not yet been able to confirm that it consistently works. It looks promising however.

Is that the one with the developer loader where you can manually install BAR files from desktop?

Well... I would like to thank everyone that got involved regarding that bypass...

I'm not sure if that's related to me, but I think there's something wrong with how I'm doing step 2 already :/

Would have to see what is meant by a "short chime" :D Pressing quickly three times on the power button (BB Passport) just brings the screen reader with no chimes. Trying to tap the screen quickly with two fingers doesn't change anything. Depending on the timing, I'm able to glitch the screen reader voice a bit, but that's it. Perhaps it's just me doing something wrong, hoping that's what's preventing me going any further ;)

Well, the chime is more for people to know when it's coming up...but tell us what happens after you bring up Screen Reader Lothaire. I'm sure this works so we can help you through it.

Well, there's maybe some progress after all... With the information you gave me, I tried from scratch again... Got through step 8. Not getting regional settings or software update.screen, it just tells me that there's no internet connectivity. Maybe I'm not doing it right at step 5, but I don't really know if there's a proper way of doing it. For exemple, there's nothing other than a wireless logo in my screen's top right corner :)

Are you hearing the Screen Reader read off Blackberry ID stuff?

Yes I do...
And at some points it says "skip" like said in the tutorial...

After seeing this I'm seriously considering buying Q10 as it's my all-time Favorite device.

Just to make sure, will I have:

  • e-mails?

  • Telegram?

  • Whatsapp?

  • Calendar services?

  • Spotify?

These are must-haves and not having 1 of them is a deal-breaker for me. I don't need anything else beyond these. (Hopefully If I can have these as native apps)

Bonus round:

  • connect to my AirPods pro?

  • Reddit app?

  • wikipedia app?

  • Dropbox app?

  • Connect to my GearS3 smartwatch? (Just for basic notifications)

u/FuzzyQuills avatar

for Email, depends on your provider; Gmail is basically toast last I checked but that's more Google wanting everyone to use their app more than just BB10 being old. Not sure about calendar as last time I used calendar sync was with my Gmail account and it slowly broke last time I used it. (Other providers may work better)

Telegram and WhatsApp both work flawlessly on BB10 if you install their APKs directly from their respective websites. I remember there was also a working spotify client but can't remember as I don't use it. (Telegram can be real sluggish on some devices sometimes though, Telegram X is a lot faster in this case but doesn't reliably work with calls)

And that's about it. Wikipedia also still works through the stock browser. For airpods, the Gear S3 and Dropbox, I have no comment.

Can’t seem to trigger screen reader on Q10 pressing the power button 3 times and tapping the screen does not do anything

u/thoughpoppiesgrow avatar

Hello!

Thank you for this subreddit and for posting these steps, and also to Leo and the blind BB10 user.

My particular device (A BlackBerry Classic SQC100-3 with Verizon branding) had a quirk in which it went to a "Regional Update" screen after Step 8. I was able to hit a "Next" button today that got me to the "Software Update" screen.

I had tried running through all the steps a few days ago and don't remember if the "Regional Update" screen had a "Next" button or not.

Also, in case others run into this, I'll post it here, to the best of my memory: the first few times I tried this, the phone would go for a split second to the "Regional Update" screen then go back to the WiFi Setup screen. I'd hit the "Next" button on the WiFi setup screen and then it would do the split-second "Regional Update" screen again. (Although, it was so fast that maybe it was actually titled "Regional Settings?" I'm not sure, and I'm not going to go back, wipe the device, and re-try now that I have it working!) After a few times cycling through this, it then spent a long time spinning on the "Regional Update" screen. (As I wrote above, today I noticed that I could just tap "Next" to skip the "Regional Update" and get to the "Software Update" screen, after which everything worked as described in your 12 steps.) I wish I could give a more accurate summary of all of that, but that's what I vaguely remember. I write it here in case it is of any help to someone else.

Thanks again for helping us resurrect our BlackBerry BB10 hardware!!!

EDIT: Punctuation.

My Passport started Regional Update but fails and gets me back to the WiFi screen? Any ideas

Yes! I'll update the post with that situation. Alternatively you can use an autoloader and get back to the main setup screen, in which case the fix will work as stated above. (This will wipe your data however so be careful.)

u/iamback_it avatar

There's a workaround to avoid the autoloader?

There is no workaround that will avoid use of an autoloader and still guarantee the fix works, no. This person had not yet run one and was trying to still apply the Ultimate Fix

I have 2 passports that did not turn off the blackberry anti-theft protection. My steps are:

- At the wifi setup screen, turn on Screen Reader

- Single tap on the Previous button. Then swipe to the left. You will hear something like "login is required"

- Continue swipe to the left until you hear input username, then input any username. Do the same for password. (use any username & password).

- Do the previous steps for several times (need to restart the phone for each time. As I remember is 10 times :D ). Then you will hear the Screen Reader talk about the BBID then just follow the steps in the post.

Good luck :D :D

Hmmm....so these things allowed you to bypass anti-theft Boring? Just confirming....

Thanks, your solution and the solution:

https://www.reddit.com/r/BlackberryPhoenix/comments/11u0ktv/blackberry_protect_and_battery_pull/

saved my BlackBerry Passport. Autoloader and connecting to WiFi were essential together with a couple of hard resets through Volume Up + Volume Down + Power Button. Thanks again! :)

u/Adolf-Rzzler avatar

Hey there, I don't know if anyone would ever read this since the post was made 2 years ago, but here goes nothing. I found an old Z10 in the attic and my dad told me to see if it works.

It had a password so I factory reset the phone. Unfortunately, my sister connected it to the Wi-Fi network, something that is not recommended as I've read above. Now the reader doesn't read off the comments mentioned. When I tried swiping left, it said "Skip button not available". Now I'm stuck because I can't autoload the phone. Even when I factory reset using BB Link on PC it still connected to the network. I tried turning off the router to see if it would do any good but alas.

Appreciate all the help I could get. Thanks

Hey Adolf,

Fear not; BBP monitors this thread. You can use an autoloader to completely wipe the phone and attempt the Ultimate Fix again.

We’ll send a link a little later but just to set expectations, do you or your father have any Blackberry 10 experience? Some people believe these devices are versions of Android or otherwise work in ways that they do not. Let us know and we’ll give you a quick primer if needed.

u/Unicornjade avatar

Im having this same issue. Any chance I can get a link?

Sure, what model?

Hello guys. Just bought a new BB Porsche Design P9982 phone and i'm stuck at the wifi connection. How can i activate the phone? Must Tell, the device has no Skip button in the SIM display, only a swipe left option that is not working with the Screen Reader. Help!!!!

Hello Available,

We're going to need some more information to assist. Where specifically in the Ultimate Fix does it fail you? What step in the process?

hello , i cant pass gesture tutorial in q5 , the display and touch works fine in any other screen but there always says . #almost..... blabla--- hope you can help me ... thanks in advance

We’ll need to know specifically where the Ultimate Fix fails for you Less…unless you are referring to the actual basic swiping tutorial, in which case I request you make a new post and tell us exactly what you’re experiencing.

u/Less-Seesaw2096 avatar

Thanks for replying Reactivate my Q5 with the turorial above, no problem. When I get to the basic gesture tutorial I can't swipe the screen, it always marks the legend that says "Almost. Place your finger lower and swipe up... "That's where it stays, when I use the autoloader again it doesn't ask me for the bb account anymore I can go straight to the screen but I only get there

Want to DM me or post on a separate thread? I may need to walk you through this one step by step.

Just got my almost new shiny Passport. Wish I came to these instructions first before connecting to my local WiFi network. So now I think I have to do AutoLoader since the original instructions won’t work for me? I’m stuck on setup screens as well.

Do we have a post here that talks about solution for those who accidentally connected to WiFi first?

Plus, do I need a SIM card for cellular service or can I use my phone on WiFi only?

Thank you!

You do and here's the autoloader, courtesy of the Blackberry Phoenix Master Archive:

https:// mega .nz/file/xwRzyQDL#dk3CzEt1C69hRYQbxRRu3K1kyegPg7qbWeZLpqHoEWI

Delete the spaces; Reddit hates MEGA.

If you don't have experience with BB10, DM me and we'll go through some fundamentals including autoloaders so you know how best to use the Passport once you get it past the wifi screen.

You do not need a SIM card no; you can use it on wifi only. (You will of course need an activated SIM to use it for cellular service, but it can connect to the Internet just fine on wireless only.)

I've setup a brand new blackberry q20 and didn't get the BBID screen at all, however at the end it says something like "you have 5 days to complete setup" is this normal ? and what happen after 5 days ? will I have to do the same again ?

This is likely someone who has done a specific Classic-only (Q20 is the same as a Classic) fix that is temporary. I recommend you use a verified autoloader and apply the Ultimate Fix for a permanent solution.

Allright thanks! Will try that with an autoloader.

It worked perfectly! :)) Thank you so much!

I did the task on the Classic: all went right.
On the Passport: stuck on Regional settings > impossible to establish a connection.

Do you have an idea on how to solve?

I'd refer you back to my advice to which you responded on the other thread; download the Passport autoloader from the Master Archive (not all autoloaders are created equal), run it, and attempt the Ultimate Fix again. This will wipe all existing data but I'm guessing you don't have anything on the Passport if you're in this situation. Let us know if you need a link to the autoloader.

u/iamback_it avatar

Unfortunately I had set up all password also with play store, mails telegram etc...no time to load again all, it seems strange also because the procedure went well on the Classic.
Thanks anyway!

I’m actually a little confused as to how that happened then and why you’re concerned with the message….if you’re able to use the device why do you care?

u/iamback_it avatar

Because it’s not my daily device but it’s annoying that for this issue I can’t use Sachesi, for example

Hello guys, I know I am a bit late to the party but I have recently gotten a BlackBerry Porsche Design PP983 running phone brand new for a steal deal. Unfortunately I have connected to a wifi device previously and need an auto loader to do it. The problem is that I don’t know which one to use and how to use it so if anyone can hook me up I’d appreciate it (my phone’s OS is BB10). Thanks

Hey Cyrux,

We can get you an autoloader, but since you felt the need to specify your device is running BB10 and autoloaders only exist for BB10 (as does the Ultimate Fix) I think we might want to chat about some fundamentals to help you make the most of your device. DM or chat me and we'll proceed.

I got the regional update page which leads me to an "unable to connect" page with only one option to choose "settings" which takes me to the wifi page.

I do not want to autoload again. What to do?

I believe Regional Settings will ultimately allow you to hit Next if you let it sit for a while, but would need to double-check that. It is an overcomable issue however.

This is excellent news, high five and low bow to all involved in finding it, been longing for my Classic ever since this problem showed up... Any chance someone will do a video tutorial of this method? Haven't tried it yet but the description of the steps feels a bit overwhelming in writing for me...

It's possible, but trust me--having seen a video of the bare bones of this method (though in another language) if you find it overwhelming in writing you'll probably find it overwhelming by video as well. ;)

With that said, definitely ask if you have any trouble--we'll help you out as best we can.

Hello,
For me, the following version worked on Passport SE 10.3.3.3216
1: Sim card taken out.
2: Set up a network connection to insert the sim card during the display, press the power button 3 times in quick succession, then repeat this one after another for 2X 5 seconds and I immediately proceeded to the wifi and basic settings. There was no SW update and nothing else. You have made a normal factory setting throughout. You didn't ask for a wifi setting either, just keep going, keep going .....

I'm glad that worked for you mtx. For the vast majority of users, folks have been stuck at the wireless settings screen--in other words, they're stopped at wifi, not at the SW update screen or anywhere else. Some on Passports have not had this issue but this fix is the one that is confirmed to work for all BB10 users and all devices.

Has anyone succeed to bypass the initial setup on a device that has not been logged out from BBID (before 4th Jan)? This is my case. I tried every trick I found, I even posted a video here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=pB9jcCgh3a0&t . I already have the latest autoloader from Crackberry.

I can't swipe up the initial setup and then I tried:

  • with and without SIM;

  • swiping left or right (text reader on);

  • different languages;

  • that trick with volume up/down restart and then using only N/P keys;

Sometimes the reader tells me about anti-theft protection being on and that I must sign in and sometimes about a skip button that is not available.

I don't know what else to try.

Hey vladi,

First of all Crackberry is unfortunately not always a good resource for autoloaders, native apps, or basically anything else BB10 and earlier, as it's been anti-BB10 for some time. I'll check your video though and we'll get you set.

A question: what do you mean "a device that has not been logged out from BBID?" If your device still has a cached BBID (as does mine and as was always perfectly safe and valid to do, despite Crackberry's assertions to the contrary) you should not have an issue. If you mean a device not logged out from Protect then we can also take care of that--just trying to figure out what the status of your device was on January 4th.

I do not have a Leap or Q5 for testing purposes but it should work with all BB10 devices. I would suggest giving it a go--let me know if you need an autoloader to start fresh.

Indeed the Screen Reader is the way to get by that situation as the post says. Glad you were able to get through it jb0rys. It does indeed work!

u/Responsible-Movie-14 avatar

Wow this is such amazing news, worked on my bb q10. Thanks a lot to everyone who contributed to this, I am so grateful!!

I am confused a bit about the fix process. I have already done the fix successfully on my phone, however every time I tried it while not connected to WiFi before, the reader started reading about Connecting to WiFi and not BBID. I had to connect to WiFi first to be able to hear about the BBID on the WiFi page. So what's the logic in suggesting not to connect to WiFi before doing the fix?

Did you start the reader from the Mobile Connect screen when you tried that? Without a SIM card in?

I've tried my times with different autoloader versions, still not working with my BB Q20.

The Wifi connection was still there, Screen reader didnt read anything about the BBID.

Any suggestion?

Hey derzug,

Let me ask you this first: what autoloader have you tried last? Also, what happens when you run the autoloader?

We'll get you set; just trying to figure out exactly where you're at as what you're describing is not possible if you've successfully run an autoloader for your device.
