Their seamless combination of baroque arrangements and gossamer vocals had few equals then or now, and nowhere is their achievement better illustrated than on the run of singles they recorded for Warner Bros. Records in the late 1960s The four Lenny Waronker-produced albums they made in those years add dimension to the group's story and emphasize their range, but the essence of Harpers Bizarre can be found on the 45s, which are all collected here for the first time. What you'll hear here is the remarkable refashioning of a four-piece guitar band enamored with the sounds of the British Invasion into a silky-smooth vocal group supported by the cream of Los Angeles' studio musician crop. The end result is a sound filled with so much sunshine that you might need to wear sunblock while you listen. This 26-track deluxe edition includes many original mono single mixes, many of which have been out of circulation since their original release. Also included are all the pre-Harpers Bizarre singles, when the band recorded as The Tikis. The deluxe, full-color booklet also includes rare photos and extensive and insightful liner notes by Joe McGasko, the host of WFMU's "Surface Noise." Uncle Clayton, can you please crush this one up?

Unfortunately, I did not like the music on this CD. I wasted my money. The songs sounded boring and dull and average. I tried and tried to get into this album, but unfortunately, I got rid of it. So, if Uncle Clayton crushes this CD up, I will be happy he done so.

Harper's Bizarre are not totally unknown to UK audiences - they had a couple of hits over here with their version of the standard 'Anything Goes', and a cover of the Simon & Garfunkel hit, '59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)'. In recent years, their music has won new fans amongst those who like the 'Sunshine Pop' genre. They were essentially a harmony pop band, more of a studio combo than anything else, and this collection of their singles is a wonderful introduction to their music. Working with a great production and arrangement team in Lenny Waronker and Van Dyke Parks, and with songs frequently supplied by the likes of Randy Newman and Bonner & Gordon, they were, in their way, quite a subversive combo. Take, for example, their version of 'Chattanooga Choo Choo' - where they amend the lyrics to "dinner in the diner, nothing could be finer, than to roll another number down in Carolina", complete with the sound of someone loudly inhaling on a joint. Similarly, songs like Randy Newman's 'The Biggest Nght of Her Life' hint at more than what the lyrics actually say, and 'The Debutante's Ball', another Newman song, is a rather savage critique on American Blue Blood class. Their version of Eddie Floyd's 'Knock On Wood' is slowed to a mildly psychedelic, phasing-drenched stroll, and lovely it is too. There are other gems like the 'b' side 'Small Talk', a Bonner and Gordon song (they wrote for The Turtles and others), a sweet little confection that lingers long in the memory. One of the band - Ted Templeman - clearly learned a lot about record production when he was with Harper's Bizarre - he ended up being one of the most successful producers of the 70's and 80's, working with the Doobie Brothers and Van Halen amongst many others.

With fine sound and informative sleeve notes, this set is a solid delight. Go ahead and buy it, for goodness sake.

I've always like this group, because while they were definitely part of the west coast sunshine pop genre, they really did have their own sound. I had seen a review that complained that all songs are in mono. Well, in 50's / 60's terminology , singles were 45's, and 45's were all pressed in mono, The mono singles are what was played on AM radio and were loaded into juke boxes. Did I mention the a lot of times the single mixes were totally different than the (stereo and mono) LP mixes? I like this collection of songs a lot, but it doesn't replace the albums (for me). You do get some nice bonuses like a couple of singles from the point when the group was on the Autumn label and were calling themselves The Tikis. You also get the hard to find Orphan Annie / Ernest Hemmingway single version of "I Love You, Alice B. Toklas." "The Harpers Bizarre 4" album's version of the song is the same version that played in the movie. This single version has an extra verse that was left out of the album version. The sound quality of the CD itself is great and would definitely recommend it (assuming you're a fan of the group). I always wondered why Curt Boettcher didn't somehow sink his claws into this group and not let got. Maybe Lenny Waronker was just not going to let that happen.

Not a bad collection, although I'm not nearly as blown away as I hoped to be. Granted, there are some great songs on here, but be forewarned that there is also a fair amount of schlock. If given the option, I'd probably give this one 3.5 stars, but I'm bumping up the rating just because this really is a well-done reissue with a generous amount of music and well-researched liner notes.

Most listeners from back in the day are familiar with Harpers Bizarre's hit version fo "The 59th Street Bridge Song (Feelin' Groovy)", but if you're like me, that's about all you ever heard by this band. The strength of Harpers Bizarre was their flawless vocal harmonies, most songs straddling soft-rock or folk-rock sounds, but some arrangements drifting into MOR or even easy listening territory. This CD begins with 5 tracks by an early version of the band when they were know as The Tikis. Very good stuff.

The rest of the material is all Harpers Bizarre and it runs the gamut from great tracks like "Come to the Sunshine" (written by Van Dyke Parks) and "Hey, You in the Crowd" to rather tepid covers of songs such as "Chattanooga Choo Choo", "Battle of New Orleans" and even "Both Sides Now" (their version sounding more the Robert Goulet one than the Joni Mitchell original). Another original, "Malibu U," which was the theme from a 1967 TV show, is also worthy of the dumpster.

Overall, I thought that this was a fairly interesting collection, but I'm not enamored enough to give it a rave rating. The CD comes with a 24-page booklet with capsule summaries of each track, plus many photos of the band members and collaborators such as Randy Newman and Harry Nilsson.

Having heard only a couple of single of this group and I have to admit I was not really a fan of the group when it was around I was surprised how smooth this all went down. For the first few songs they appeared to be just another American group trying to copy the British Invasion groups but somehow they developed their own style eventually. As long as you don't expect to be blown away, this stuff is just fine.
