Caitlin Fitzgerald Talks Life With Aidan Turner

jumper, jeans and an expression of alert exhaustion. “It’s a little overwhelming,” she says. “It’s a big old play and we don’t have a ton of time.” They are halfway through a terrifyingly short four-week rehearsal period here before opening next month.

Turner and FitzGerald got married in a secret ceremony in Italy in 2020 after meeting on the American film The Man Who Killed Hitler and Then the Bigfoot. How long did it take for them to get together? “It was pretty quick,” Fitzgerald says with a smile. Has she ever been abused by jealous Poldark fans? “There was a bit at the beginning, but I’m not on any social media. I don’t make myself available to it any more. Occasionally someone comes to the house, which is a bit of a drag.”
FitzGerald has asked that we don’t dwell on her personal life, partly because she’s private and partly, I assume, because she doesn’t want the interview to be swamped by talk of abs and scythes. Fair enough. She raves, though, about London. “I have always wanted to live here.” When she was 15 she saw Simon Russell Beale in Ben Jonson’s The Alchemist at the National, and her drama degree at the prestigious Tisch School of the Arts in New York included a semester at Rada. “So, getting to flash my National Theatre badge here . . . this business is crushingly awful sometimes, but there are also moments of such gratitude and excitement.”
