World Cup: Mbappe double against Denmark sends France into last 16

France have won both of their opening two games for the third consecutive World Cup.

And they have laid down a marker with these two I think. Australia and Denmark made them work hard but they got the job done both times.

Look away now, Denmark fans: that's a fifth winless game at the World Cup, your longest wait for a victory at the finals.

On this form from France, ending that run against Australia would be a perfectly-timed way to earn a knockout stage place.

Whatever you have to have as a forward, Kylian Mbappe's got it all. The timing of his runs, the understanding of when and how to go. He's a very special talent.

Because of him, that is France's chance. If he keeps on performing and he's in that mood, France have got a chance.

He looks like a kid in the playground - he just looks like he's enjoying it. As soon as he gets the ball, you can hear the roar - and he's feeding off that, there's no doubt about that. He loves that - and rightly so.

Very much one to file under 'scant consolation', but Denmark outpassed France and were marginally more accurate with their passes overall.

Antoine Griezmann has created nine chances at this World Cup.

That's equalled the most by a French player after two games of the tournament, set by Zinedine Zidane in 1998.

Kylian Mbappe is France's second-top scorer in World Cup history now with seven, despite this only being his second tournament.

However the man he trails, Just Fontaine, only played at one World Cup.

Fontaine scored a remarkable 13 goals in six games in 1958.

France have looked very good again - particularly in forward areas. Antoine Griezmann, Kingsley Coman, Ousmane Dembele and of course that guy Kylian Mbappe.

What a player, what a superstar. He made the difference tonight. They were asked the question when Denmark got back into the game, what have you got? Didier Deschamps made a couple of changes and they worked perfectly.

When you've got that guy in your team in the form that he's in - he looks so comfortable and confident in front of goal - you've got a chance. He won the game for them.

Kylian Mbappe is just a class act, isn't he?

He is France's joint seventh top scorer ever, alongside Zinedine Zidane on 31 goals.

Remember, he's just 23.

Denmark have to beat second-placed Australia in their final group game on Wednesday to go through.

Even then, it wouldn't be 100% certain if Tunisia shocked France.

Australia know for sure they are through with a victory in that game.

It's all over. France are the first team to reach the knockout stages of the 2022 World Cup.

Didier Deschamps' substitution has worked bringing Kinglsey Coman on that right-hand side. Ousmane Dembele was just starting to look a bit tired and Coman's just added a bit of pace into the game and it's worked perfectly.

Denmark's Joakim Maehle volleys over from 30 yards from a cleared long throw. Surely that's it.

Apart from Hugo Lloris, Kylian Mbappe has had the least touches of any France player currently on the pitch. Fair to say he's made them count, since his team fell behind.

Most of his heat's been out on the left - but he's been as ice-cold as ever once he's inside the box.

France do seem to be trying to get the ball to Kylian Mbappe here. Kingsley Coman's pass it intercepted.

We're past the halfway stage of injury time now. Denmark have the ball. Can they create one more chance?

France bring on Youssouf Fofana and Denmark pop on Alexander Bah. Antoine Griezmann and Rasmus Kristensen are replaced.

I don't see a weakness in Kylian Mbappe's game - I said he's a superstar and he has incredible talent. Whatever you want - the touch, the technique, the left foot and the right foot, the spring in the air, the ability to finish it off, the ability to get in and score the great goals as well as the scrappy goals.

I don't see a weakness - he is fantastic. Great to watch.
